Anxiety seems to be such an issue for youth and adults these days and one that causes people to really struggle in their lives for a variety of reasons. Navigating parenthood is hard and finding a place to put your own trauma histories behind you so you can keep moving forward. Helping youth, families and adults in a variety of common struggles we have is where I find myself most helpful. I am nationally Certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and trained in Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBITS) to treat Tourette and Tic Disorders in youth and adults.

It takes a lot of strength and courage to open up and be vulnerable. In these times of vulnerability and hardship, I aspire to provide a space for you to be who you want to be, without judgement, where you will find acceptance and a feeling of safety.

Asking for help takes courage. As a therapist, my role is to support you through your journey of self-discovery and healing. I believe that everyone has the capacity for healing. It is up to the individual to determine what that looks like for you. I will support you and help you process whatever it is that led you to seek therapy.

My guess is that you are struggling with how to cope with the life that’s around you. Your relationships likely have reoccurring disagreements. You’re stuck in a pattern that you don’t understand or at least don’t know how to change. You may feel overwhelmed, tired, angry, sad. My second guess is you’d like things to change and you’re ready to find someone who can help you do that. You probably want to feel joy, peace, and that you can be fully yourself without fear of what anyone else thinks.

My professional life has been dedicated to the easing of psychological suffering, particularly the suffering caused by the ravages of abuse by narcissistic, antagonistic, or other toxic persons, as well as depression, anxiety, trauma, and co-occuring disorders. Our personalities can be badly damaged by early traumas and disrupted early attachments, and our emotional reactions, behaviors, and addictions, large and small, are typically our desperate methods of coping with the pain. By learning new ways of managing our feelings, responding to others, and healing our memories, we can grow and develop towards our best selves.

You've felt different your entire life. You've never felt like you fit in with what was expected of you. Because of this you never really got to learn who you really are. You never had a chance to create meaning, joy, and grow into your potential. You're exhausted and it feels like you have to fight every day just for others to see and recognize you for the person you are. You feel responsible for the demands of others. You feel like you're the only one in this world who feels the way you do. You want to be able to see yourself as who you truly are.

Engaging in counseling can be a scary first step. You may wonder if your symptoms are just in your head and if you really just need to "tough it out". I applaud the courage it takes to look for a counselor and entrust someone with the scariest or most difficult parts of your life. I am honored to be that person for my clients.

I believe that you are the expert in your life and that the answers you seek are inside of you. My role is to help you examine your thoughts, feelings, and your life experiences in order for you to heal and grow from the inside of who you truly are. You were likely molded to think and feel a certain way in childhood and through various life experiences, and these thoughts and feelings may no longer serve you. Research shows that you can change unhelpful thoughts, feelings and core beliefs through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other innovative techniques. Lets see how we can work together.

The fact that you’re looking through therapist profiles on Psychology Today suggests that you’re looking for some kind of change in your life. The status quo has you frustrated and dissatisfied. You’ve probably tried to change on your own, but the change hasn’t quite stuck. Each time you fall short of the change you hope for, you likely get more discouraged, lose momentum, feel bad about yourself, and return to old habits. It can feel like a hopeless downward spiral that can lead you to say, “Why bother?” But, here you are! You haven’t given up. This is good!

Facing emotional challenges can make you feel alone and lost. When people can’t physically see the wounds you carry you can wonder if you’re the only one, that you’re “just this way” and there’s nothing to be done, you’re broken. You have every right to feel what you’re feeling, your emotions, actions, thoughts, all of it makes perfect sense given what you’ve gone through AND change can happen. I want you to feel accepted while we push for change together. I don’t believe anyone is broken even when we feel that way sometimes, I believe we face challenges and challenges can be overcome.

I am honored by your consideration. My name is Jonathan Douglas, I am passionate about helping individuals address life challenges that are oftentimes as a result of unresolved issues stemming from grief and loss, trauma, abuse, societal issues and artifacts from the individuals family of origin. I view seeking help and support as a strength. It is difficult to be vulnerable and explore the challenges that persist, however through that effort we can work to find peace. I aim to offer a unique perspective given my life experiences that I would hope you as a potential client can find of benefit.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Yakima?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
