Music therapy is intended for children, teens and adults who have a strong connection to music, play and art, and who believe that starting with their creativity & strengths can help create therapeutic change. This creative form of therapy uses music in all of its facets. No musical skills are necessary. I work with children and teens who struggle with social-emotional challenges due to trauma, life changes, learning challenges, academic/social pressures that can result in anxiety and depression. For adults, music therapy might provide a richer and more intuitive experience with which to explore and cope with anxiety and depression.
Analytical Music Therapy is the symbolically inspired and analytically informed use of music within a therapeutic relationship to bring about change. I use a variety of drums, percussion instruments, flutes, piano, guitar and sound-making devices to improvise with clients, allowing us to access unconscious experiences that can then be verbally processed.
Using sound, musical instruments and the voice can access buried emotions and experiences more directly. The shared emotions expressed during the exchange create an empathic relationship with the potential for reparative experiences. Music is a primal language that people of all walks of life possess. It is a creative and joyful medium to engage in therapy.
