Finding and embracing an authentic self is one of the core missions of adult life. What too often corrupts this search, though, is the phenomenon of shame - a destructive force if there ever was one. Shame can contribute to substance use, depression, anxiety, interpersonal struggles, poor health outcomes, maladaptive trauma responses, and, at extremes, psychosis and suicidal ideation. Such maladies, when approached in the context of a compassionate and trusting therapeutic relationship, can be transformed into signs pointing the way toward a meaningful and fulfilling sense of self.
I am a psychologist, writer, and proud father of twins who primarily works in a psychiatric hospital setting. There, I aid adults in navigating severe mental health crises. A common theme has been helping such individuals harness their inner creativity to reduce shame and, in its wake, generate celebratory connections with themselves, others, and the world.
The extremes of existence teach us about the spaces in between, and my experience treating individuals with severe mental health disorders has allowed me to feel comfortable in most any clinical situation. So, no matter who you are, I want to learn from you, and I want to invite you along in this learning process. Together, we can forge nobility from shame.
