When my sister asked how I would describe myself as a counselor, I replied, "I am a professional human being". I was half-joking, but the statement was particularly self-aware. I feel that I am most authentic/effective when I am prioritizing the counselor/client relationship. I regard my clients with unconditional respect, giving him/her space to think/behave in a manner that is most congruent with their best self. For this purpose, I prefer to lead with the client's strengths of character. This sense of confidence is a source of momentum when confronting the external/internal challenges that are hindering their progress.
