In 26 years of professional work, I have learned many things, especially the reality that people are fundamentally good-and that prior trauma often causes them to employ unhealthy coping mechanisms. This is not their fault-it was a survival response-to be able to get up each day and go on. Such people deserve compassion and respect, not the scorn that many direct at them. I truly enjoy connecting with them and working together to try to heal their wounds, so that they can pursue healthy relationships and a sense of peace. I am here to help, not to judge. I am also amazed at the tremendous resiliency people have.
I worked for 25 years for the psychiatric crisis hotline and crisis outreach team in Cuyahoga County, and it gave me a unique look into many things regarding human experiences and behaviors. I learned to talk with a wide variety of people. Faith is a very big part of my life, and ideally this is something to utilize in therapy to help others heal and grow.
People come to therapy for a lot of different reasons, and there are many paths to healing. I have learned how important the therapeutic relationship is to foster that healing and growth, and the goal for me is to set up a safe space where clients can share anything at all-without judgment. I see how important it is for clients to feel heard and understood.
