I am a clinical psychologist, licensed by the state of New York, and have been in practice for over thirty years, treating individuals and couples. My post graduate training was at the American Institute for Psychoanalysis (AIP). I am a training and supervisory analyst and a member of the faculty of the Institute. I was president of the AIP for many years. As a psychodynamically oriented therapist, my work with individuals and couples includes the exploration and understanding of one's history and current personality dynamics. Emphasis is on increasing awareness of self-one's history and current personality dynamics.
Both cognitive understanding and emotional connections are integrated with, ultimately, the goal of developing a healthier and stronger sense of self and increasing one's capacity to make freer choices for what one needs and wants in life.
In couples's therapy, each partner is encouraged to explore the assumptions that were made going into the relationship, to understand the similarities and differences of each other, to look at communication patterns, all in the attempt to work out the couple's difficulties.
