As human beings, we have needs for both belonging and autonomy, attachment and freedom—which in adult life, often seem thwarted. We want to be heard and understood. Marriage & Family Therapy is based on a comprehensive theory of what promotes effective, functional relationships vs dysfunctional ones. Thus, therapy is an educative process, tailored to the individual who seeks awareness and insight into how to maximize clear communication, intimacy, and fulfillment in all of our relationships.
Many people feel anxious or resistant to seek counseling; but in my opinion, therapy is nothing but education about areas of life no one ever taught us, for example how love works, communication around conflict, sexuality, parenting skills, the grief process, stages like mid-life transition, and what is emotional maturity. In short, Adult Education!
