Perhaps it seems that life feels harder than it should be, or you are unable to manage stress and your emotions in a way that you would like. Maybe you feel isolated or depressed, or are concerned about some of your habits, behaviors or relationships. The challenges and struggles you might be facing, although very painful at times, can actually be an invitation to engage in the journey of becoming a better version of your self. Whether you are dealing with difficult emotions, self-defeating behaviors, relationship/parenting issues, or just a feeling that something is off, attuned and compassionate therapy can help.

Times of crisis are not only occasions that require mindful problem-solving, but can also be opportunities for personal growth. Psychotherapy should provide a calm and supportive setting to reduce anxiety and stress, increase a sense of confidence and competence, and promote the establishment of more satisfying connections to others. My training encompasses psychodynamic, experiential, cognitive-behavioral, and family systems therapy. I work actively and collaboratively with individuals (from 8 to 85), couples, and families. I also provide neuropsychological evaluations for children and adults experiencing difficulties in personal, academic, or occupational functioning.

Are you a woman who grew up in a challenging or even unsafe family environment? Do you struggle with self-judgement, self-doubt, or self-sabotage? Do you find yourself confused in personal/professional relationships? If so, you may believe your difficulties are your own fault, and that if only you could be better or stronger, things would be easier. In truth, you may be dealing with unhealed trauma. Unsteady attachment to one or both parents can be the unrecognized source of a lot of adult suffering, Understanding its impact and learning to care for yourself instead of judging yourself is the path to freedom.

Asking for help is not easy. Perhaps you have tried to resolve your concerns on your own but feel now is the time for something different. I believe it's important to find a therapist with whom you feel comfortable to be yourself. Growth can take place when trust and a sense of connection develop over time.

Hi, I'm Dr. Phillips! I work in New York City and Montclair, NJ and am currently taking new clients in both locations. I have worked with youth and families from many different backgrounds and believe in two fundamental truths: (1) modern life, in different ways, can be very hard for any person, regardless of one's circumstances, and (2) we are all trying our best, but sometimes we get “stuck.” I specialize in working with children and adolescents, and their families who are trying to understand and support them.

How brave of you to be searching for a therapist. Getting to this point often means the struggles you face have gotten to a point of affecting your quality of life; and admitting this can feel defeating. At the same time, if you’re here, you know therapy can be an opportunity to improve your well-being. By collaborating with me, we can build an understanding of your struggles and work through embracing meaningful growth and change. My twenty years experience in the mental health field has taught me that the most significant change and healing comes from within the client, and can be fostered through a supportive therapeutic rapport.

Do you feel stuck? Disconnected? I believe the potential for happiness and fulfillment in both one's relationship with themselves and others is universal. Through Emotionally Focused Therapy I have been able to help couples/individuals move through negative patterns that often leave one stuck and can lead to anger, resentment and self-criticism. Have you experienced a traumatic event and are looking to heal? I have been trained in EMDR which is a therapy designed to resolve unprocessed traumatic memories. EMDR enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life.

It’s hard being human. In our short window of time on earth we will have moments of great joy and beauty, but also experiences of sadness, stress, and pain. We are confronted with a difficult problem - how do we deal effectively with a reality that spans all different feelings and experiences? Often we deal with them in ineffective ways that leave us feeling worse off than when we started. There is hope, however. Together we can work together to recognize the patterns you're stuck in, learn skills to manage difficult thoughts and feelings more effectively, and work towards a rich and meaningful life.

“Girl, you got it all together!” That’s what they say. But inside you’re falling apart because you feel so stuck and unhappy. You no longer connect with the person that others see on the outside, because you’re paralyzed on the inside. So instead you go through your days wearing a mask, feeling like a failure, stressed & overwhelmed, and/or battling feelings of "not enoughness." You find yourself asking, “When is life REALLY going to begin for me?”

I am a licensed clinical psychotherapist who earned my Master’s Degree in Social Work from New York University. After completing my Master’s, I went on to attend a four year post-graduate program at The National Institute of the Psychotherapies, where I was certified in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy. I believe that with the right psychotherapy, one can face any life challenge head on and develop the insight and the skills to grow from them. I have an empathic approach that allows the space for my patients to look within and do the necessary work to improve their lives.

People seek therapy for many reasons. Perhaps you are in a crisis, confronting a life transition (divorce, retirement, death, illness, empty nest, new relationship), having difficulty coping with work stress, using/abusing substances, or "feeling stuck" and unable to make positive life changes. I believe that most of us have blind spots - emotional patterns or behaviors that can get in the way of our healing or fully exploring life’s challenges and opportunities. My role is to provide clinical insight and guidance that is collaborative and respectful, supporting your unique journey toward recovery and growth.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
