Collaboration and trust characterize a strong therapeutic relationship. Therapy is very much a conversation about how you think and feel and what you hope to change. My starting questions are "why now," and "how would you like me to help"? I am trained in developmental and clinical psychology and work with adolescents, young adults, families and adults throughout the life span. Anxiety, depression, substance misuse, eating disorders and transitioning to adulthood are specialties.
For many years of I have been helping patients understand how family relationships, biology, learning style, social and cultural milieu and experience impact feelings, behaviors and choices. My approach is practical, combining insight with evidenced based skills and strategies. I rely on psychodynamic, relational, cognitive behavioral and psycho-educational perspectives.
Before becoming a clinician, I consulted in early childhood education; taught child development to mothers of addicted newborns; served as Associate Director of the Center for Research on Women at Barnard College; and taught Women’s Studies at Dartmouth College. My rich work life has deepened my appreciation for the complexity of patients' lives.
