Addiction is complicated. For a long time, society has stigmatized those struggling with addiction, assuming that "addicts" are just bad people who lack the willpower to stop. This couldn't be further from the truth. Addiction doesn't just happen. It is the unfortunate (and unintended) result of trying to alleviate or avoid emotional pain, emptiness, and disconnection; experiences often associated with trauma. This perspective applies to substance addictions and addictive behaviors including sex, pornography, gambling, video games, workaholism, shopping, or any other form of chronic escapism that results in negative consequences.
I primarily utilize behavioral therapies (CBT & DBT) with a psychodynamic framework and an overarching Humanistic lens. Together, we will examine the behaviors you use to cope with emotional pain (e.g., addictive behaviors), explore the origins of those patterns (e.g., trauma), and establish more adaptive strategies to effectively manage distress.
