Going to therapy can be an uncomfortable experience and even scary at times and I can provide a safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings. I recognize that everyone’s struggle is unique and no one is immune from hardship so they may need help managing life stressors and relationships. Sometimes these struggles can also turn into shame or not feeling good enough. As an Arab Muslim American, I can help clients through a cultural and faith-based lens tackle anxious or depressive feelings. My background and experience ensure I can provide comprehensive and culturally responsive mental health care to a diverse population.

As a South Asian Muslim woman, I am familiar with the concerns in our community about seeking therapy.
Are you struggling with challenges that seem insurmountable? Are they causing you to feel overwhelmed, hopeless and isolated? I seek to help you feel empowered and work towards healing by providing you with the tools and skills to enhance and improve your life. I believe the therapeutic process is collaborative and should provide an environment for you to explore and identify patterns of behavior, gain clarity and seek resolution. It is important for me to create a safe and non-judgmental environment for you to be able to share your thoughts, feelings and experiences.

I am also inclusive of women of color with intersecting minority identities, such as those who are LGBTQ+ and Muslim.
The strongest people are not those who show strength in front of us but those who win battles we know nothing about. I believe therapy requires balance. I will assist you in processing past events that inform your current struggles. At the same time, I will support you in learning new skills to live a more aware and present life. I use a collaborative approach in which you are the expert in your experiences. My approach to therapy is informed by a multicultural lens that acknowledges how our stories are shaped by social influences, including our families, cultural and religious communities, and other social systems.

As a Mental Health Advocate, I give speeches all over the nation to reduce stigma around Mental Health and encourage people to seek professional counseling, rather than “just talking to a friend about it or not talk about their problems at all”. As a Pakistani, Muslim immigrant who came to America with no knowledge of mental health, I understand how the confusion of identities, societal pressure to fit in and cultural differences can create emotional turmoil. Being in the mental health field for over 7 years, has allowed me to evolve as a Mental Health public speaker, who helps those with anxiety, depression and suicidal ideations,

I specialize providing therapy for women who are Arab/South Asian or people of various backgrounds. I am a first-generation Muslim Arab American, born and raised in NYC. In my early years and adulthood, accessing resources and services that felt inclusive and culturally sensitive was challenging. My own journey in healing has sparked a desire to provide culturally sensitive care to people from all walks of life.

Croy is a member of the Muslim Association of Psychological Services (MAPS) and the founder of the New Jersey chapter.
So often, it can be difficult to open up to a stranger. For many of us, placing our struggles in the hands of others can be an emotionally and sometimes physically demanding task. A safe space is needed, one without judgment or bias; a place to feel cared for, listened to, and supported. This is the space Croy strives to create.

I am a second-generation Pakistani Muslim raised in NJ. In my own healing journey, accessing mental health resources that were inclusive and culturally informed was challenging. My journey of healing has ignited a desire to provide trauma informed care using a culturally informed lens. Many of my clients have struggled with their own healing journey. Using a trauma focused lens, mindfulness and strength-based approach I am able to help clients navigate their challenges. I focus on fostering emotional processing and self-care so that my clients are able to embark on their own path to healing.

I am skilled at working with clients from diverse backgrounds, who struggle with mood disorders, substance abuse, addiction, depression, anxiety, adjustment difficulties, and identity issues. In most cases, it is hard to find a counselor clients can connect with. I am dedicated to understanding the unique struggles of clients–therapy is never a one-size-fits-all approach. I am trained to help clients figure out tangible solutions to issues and develop skills to meet their goals.

Managing life can be overwhelming if we do not have the right supports in place and fail to equip ourselves with the needed tools. My goal as a therapist is to aid my clients in maintaining wellness in all areas of their life. How we think and how we feel are the greatest contributors to the reality we live. Muslim Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

A culturally sensitive therapist will be respectful of faith, race, sexual orientation, gender, age, disabilities, or anything that is relevant to an individual’s reasons for seeking therapy. This mental health practitioner will therefore be able to recognize the role of faith in a client’s life, and they can appreciate the cultural values and beliefs of others. Cultural sensitivity on the part of the therapist may enhance the possibility of a strong therapeutic bond, even if the clinician does not have an extensive understanding of a client’s background before therapy begins.

How might I inquire about a therapist's experience with Muslim clients?

It is best to ask directly whether a therapist has worked with Muslim clients, and if so, the extent to which cultural or religious principles factored into their work together. You can also ask whether a therapist who is familiar with Islamic practices, values, and beliefs incorporates them into their professional work, and if so, how. If the therapist does not have a sufficient knowledge base, they may well know and can refer you to someone who has such experience.

What if the therapist does not have my exact background?

It is not necessary for a therapist to share one’s exact religious background for therapy to be successful. A qualified and culturally sensitive therapist will appreciate diversity within the Muslim community as well as diversity overall, and will have a sense of how religious and cultural issues can contribute to mental health. In addition, a good therapist would be willing to learn from their clients.

How do I recognize an effective Muslim therapist?

Like all therapists, a Muslim therapist who is effective will have the requisite training and expertise in evidence-based techniques, as well as the ability to connect with you on a personal level. An effective Muslim therapist may also demonstrate a clear understanding of your cultural background and faith. A therapist with such cultural sensitivity will set the stage for a strong therapeutic alliance.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of the Muslim faith?

The directory of Muslim therapists includes mental health providers who have shared their cultural background in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist with a similar background. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. When the number of therapists identified as Muslim is limited, the directory will also show therapists with extensive experience working with clients from relevant backgrounds.
