There are changes in a one’s life that can be overwhelming or difficult to manage. Some life transitions for teens and adults may be so overpowering that it can lead to increased stress, depression, anxiety, feelings of guilt, irritability/anger, grief, and loneliness/isolation. These emotions also come into play on the path to parenthood which is full of surprises. Pregnancy, infertility, loss and becoming a parent can be different than expected. It can bring up unexpected feelings like crying frequently, feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, feelings of guilt/blame, and difficulties with adjustment to pregnancy or postpartum period.

I practice each intervention through distinctive situations my clients may experience when living with trauma and mental health which can develop symptoms of depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and co-occurring addictive disorders.
Childhood trauma can cripple us, it creates overpowering ‘intense’ emotions such as anxiety, depression, and anger when left unattended which begins to create physical symptoms to defend our bodies from the internal wounds. Has there ever been a time in your life where you have experienced this reaction? Are you experiencing these feelings based on current or past trauma from childhood, early teens, adolescence, adulthood, or as a senior? I aim to utilize a variety of actionable techniques to help reduce trauma related symptoms and make lasting changes in life.

As a former academic/ intervention middle school counselor, I developed a keen insight into supporting and guiding parents with their children's challenging behaviors that can negatively impact healthy development.
I provide therapy to children, adolescents, and adults for broad spectrum of issues ranging from mild to severe. I counsel individuals and families for relationship difficulties, separation/divorce, parenting challenges, individual/family crises, survivors of abuse, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, grief/loss, trauma, and suicidal/self-injurious behavior.During difficult times when a person feels very vulnerable, it takes a tremendous amount of courage and energy to seek help. My approach is warm and genuine; my sessions are collaborative so clients to develop effective coping skills to overcome obstacles in their life after therapy has terminated and not foster dependency.

As a previously practicing educational psychologist in an alternative school setting, I often encountered students who moved through the public school systems without the support they needed to learn basic foundational skills. Creating a lack of understanding of how they learn; causing low self-esteem and low academic and social functioning. Additionally, these academic difficulties often bring about behavior challenges in school and in the home setting, as students feel incapable of learning to their full potential. These students often require assessment to further determine appropriate intervention for academic success.

Intervention Therapists

How does an intervention work?

An intervention is a planned, structured meeting in which a person’s family or friends voice concerns about the person’s behavior and its consequences; the goal is for the person to accept treatment. In this meeting, the person’s loved ones (often with the guidance of a trained interventionist) share how the person’s behavior has harmed them and the consequences if the person refuses treatment. They collectively ask the person to accept a proposed treatment plan.

How effective are interventions?

There isn’t extensive research on the efficacy of interventions, in part because success is difficult to measure. Individuals often enter addiction treatment after an intervention, for example, but treatment itself may not work, especially if the person only begins due to external pressure from others rather than due to internal motivation to change. However, if all other attempts at helping someone have failed, an intervention may be worth exploring.

What are the limitations of interventions?

While a friend or family member’s intentions are in the right place in wanting to help a loved one through an intervention, there are significant limitations to the approach. The surprising nature of the event can make the person feel ambushed or judged. They may feel embarrassed or ashamed as a result, and relationships may be strained or broken. This can make it difficult for the individual to be receptive to the concerns of their loved ones and the interventionist.

Are there alternatives to interventions?

Rather than confronting a loved one through an intervention, an effective and less pressured approach is to create space for a caring, open, one-on-one conversation. This works best if the loved one asks open-ended questions, listens attentively to the answers, and frames their observations and statements with concern rather than judgment. More than one conversation may be needed, but change can take root over time.
