My ideal client would be open to my observations of their personality; one who knows that I too can learn from them, not only the other way around; who is a good historian and willing to be compliant in sharing pertinent factors to their recovery; one with whom I can establish a basis of mutual trust and who understands that my role as a therapist is not to only one who can empathize with their situation but appreciate a good sense of humor; one who is willing to apply my experience, strength and hope to their problem; one who is open to the importance of accepting life on life's terms.
Whether or not it's about addiction, I view acceptance as the central key to handling our issues or as I once read, "our pain isn't so much in our problems but in our resistance to problems." As for addiction, I can sum it up by saying when you've found your bottom, then the only way is up. Until then you just have more research to do.
One of the things I've learned in life is that many people may not relate to at best, or even believe at worst, what one is experiencing until they've been in your shoes. This realization has brought me to gain a greater open mindedness to the plight of others.
