Everyone has internal and external strengths that can offer resilience during life’s most difficult challenges. I have spent time with several different populations of people in many different stages of life, all experiencing a challenge of some kind. One common theme I often see is the need for hope and connection. In my practice, it is important to build trust with individuals and incorporate hope, connection, and support as they pull from their strengths and work toward their goals. Whether you are experiencing an increase in sadness, worry, relationship problems, or experiencing one of life’s difficult moments, there is hope.

The ups and downs of life can cause issues, which if not addressed, can cause mental health problems. Therapy is a place to learn how to transform our internal dialogue during those challenging times in our life. It can mean confronting what we have typically avoided, in a safe and reaffirming environment where science-based interventions reinforce resiliency. I believe that empathy and compassion combined with evidence-based interventions can help you develop coping skills that facilitate growth to your person-centered goals. I use a gentle, non-judgmental, but direct approach, and provide a confidential and respectful environment.

One of the things that is most important to me in any relationship is authenticity. We want to know that we are able to form trusting and honest connections with others. I think this is true in any relationships but has special importance in the therapeutic relationship. I want to learn about who you really are and what it is you value. I work well with those who are willing to be open and a little uncomfortable in order to make meaningful changes. In therapy, we share a stance of curiosity. I have found that when we replace judgement with this curiosity, we can make the meaningful changes we desire.

You've read every parenting book out there and none of it works. Strict punishments and behavior charts make things worse and yet gentle parenting makes you feel walked all over. Initially perhaps you thought your child would grow out of some of these things or maybe even "forget" something bad that happened but now you are starting to second guess yourself. Something just doesn't seem right with your child and your gut is telling you that professional help is the way to go. And you are right, research shows that early intervention is far more effective than waiting until later in childhood to deal with problems.

My career started as a therapist working with clients in recovery from substance use disorders. As my work progressed, I realized that excessive substance use was merely a coping mechanism for those suffering from mental health challenges, such as social anxiety, general anxiety, family discord, childhood abandonment or abuse, low self esteem, difficult relationships, parenting issues, transitions, retirement, past trauma and more. I am passionate about helping clients find relief from narcissistic family members, partners or colleagues, in particular. Thus, the scope of my work includes a broad range of mental health issues.

We all go through seasons in our lives where it would be beneficial to have someone come along side and help us get out of our own muck. I work with a variety of people but particularly like helping people get past traumatic events or to have better relationships with others.

There are many reasons why someone might want to come to therapy. Are you feeling sad, worried, irritable or angry most of the time? Maybe it feels hard to regulate your mood. You may have experienced trauma. You could be going through a difficult time in your life due to stress, grief or life changes. Your relationships with your friends or responsibilities at school might feel overwhelming. You could be an athlete that feels stuck or has a mental block. Any of these situations can leave you feeling lonely, stuck or hopeless. I am here to help provide compassion, hope and trauma-informed care.

I am strength-based in my approach to counseling and use cognitive behavior therapy to help clients identify and reframe negative thought patterns in order to achieve their goals.
Times of struggle and pain can also be times of positive growth. When we learn that we have choices in how we respond to the situations in our lives, we can become empowered to choose to respond to stressors in a way that enables us to move forward in an intentional and positive direction.
It is my goal to help you discover the choices and strengths you have to cope with the challenges you face and to also discover the gifts that are so often hidden in adversities in order that you might actively choose the future you want.

I have experience using Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Strength-Based Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing to name a few.
I have a unique understanding of racial traumas, college life struggles, and coping with low self-esteem. It is my mission to create a space for everyone to feel comfortable. I understand it can be difficult to feel certain about talking to someone, but I am committed to providing a supportive environment. Gender, race, ethnicity, and sexuality should not be a barrier to getting compassionate care. (Sometimes my emails get sent to the junk folder, so if you haven't heard from me you should check there)

How does strength-based therapy work?
During strength-based therapy sessions, the therapist will ask about an individual’s experiences of stress, pain, or trauma with the goal of orienting the client to view themselves as a survivor rather than a victim, and focusing on their strengths rather than on their weaknesses. In framing a client’s personal narrative along these lines, the therapist and client work together to identify existing skills that can be harnessed.
Is strength-based therapy evidence-based?
Strength-based therapy is an evidence-based treatment that has been studied extensively and shown to be effective across domains. The treatment has been found to be particularly effective in helping individuals who are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health concerns. Strength-based therapy has been used by therapists to help clients for more than 60 years.
How long does strength-based therapy last?
There’s no precise timeline for strength-based therapy. The duration of treatment depends on the individual’s specific needs and goals and the severity of their concerns. Some individuals may find they achieve their therapeutic goals quickly, while others might benefit from ongoing support and guidance in order to continue progressing.
How effective is strength-based therapy?
Clinical research and decades of practice have shown strength-based therapy to be an effective treatment to improve mental health and well-being for many conditions. The treatment can engender a sense of connection and collaboration between the therapist and the individual, fostering a positive therapeutic relationship. For individuals with narcissistic tendencies, strength-based therapy may be less effective, as the focus on the individual’s strengths may undermine the work needed to honestly assess the challenges the individual faces.
