I have extensive experience with eating disorders and mood disorders, both depressed and anxious.
I am known for my direct manner and skill building emphasis. I believe in human potential and orient myself toward teaching people how to manage their lives rather than assuming the role of managing their life for them. My principal professional affiliation is with the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) of which I am a Fellow. I have found that group psychotherapy provides an effective avenue for personal change and skills consolidation, especially for people who struggle with relationships. I enjoy working with adolescents, marital cases and individuals with long term mood disorders.

My name is Dominique Jackson Pittman and I am an LCSW working with individuals who struggle with issues rooted in depression, anxiety, and trauma.
Do you often feel on edge, fatigued, or irritable? Do you feel like there are no other options or that no one is listening? Do you feel like you struggle to focus on the present because of so much thought on the past? Do you isolate or often feel down? These are all common for many of us at different parts of our lives. Many of us need support and struggle to discover who and what resources we have so that we may overcome life stressors. Therapy could be just what you need to tap into your best you! You have made a major step in your mental health journey just by searching for a therapist to fit your needs.

I am a LCSW with over 20 years experience working with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relationship issues, women’s issues, and stress.
Oftentimes, the origin of our individual emotional struggles are not always apparent to us. We can become alarmed when these struggles begin to impact on our day to day living and relationships. It is then that clients most often begin to reach out for therapy to gain further insight into their thoughts, actions, and feelings. Distorted thinking patterns can fuel low self esteem and affect every area in a persons life. A once used defense mechanism may no longer be useful or beneficial to your mental health and once identified can be discussed in therapy and clients can learn more adaptive ways of coping.

I have been a therapist for 20 years and have treated adult clients with mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and trauma, as well as dual diagnosis, substance abuse, and problem gambling. I have also seen adolescents in treatment for substance abuse and problem gambling issues. I believe it is important for the client to feel secure and at ease in a supportive therapeutic environment, without judgment, and that it is necessary to empower the client to resolve the issue and live his or her best life.

I have nearly 12 years of experience in the treatment of men’s issues, depression, anxiety, adjustment, and emotional trauma.
There are many reasons people seek out counseling, but the underlying reasons are that we are looking for change, meaning, or healing. Whatever your individual needs may be, I commend you for taking the first steps in addressing your situation head-on. Each client is unique, and therefore, there is no one right approach that may work best for everyone. Because of this, I use a trauma-informed integrative style to give you, the client, space to be yourself in an empathic and non-judgmental environment.

Seeing others heal through different therapeutic approaches is one of my greatest accomplishments in life. My goal is to create an atmosphere where people can freely express themselves without judgement or ridicule from the therapist but to aide in being the best version of themselves. My target audience are adolescent teens and adults struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and/or any social emotional impact one may be experiencing. Using a CBT approach, my goal is to assist the client in establishing and differentiating between negative and healthy thoughts as well as see the power of behavioral change.

Depression, bipolar illness, schizophrenia, PTSD, anger, grief, loss, OCD, hoarding, and various forms of addiction and abuse are all issues with which I have experience.
I view it as an honor and a privilege to work with those who have the personal courage it takes to make changes in their lives. At any age, we all have potential for growth and change. "Finding the good and building on that" is a philosophy I strongly embrace. I see it as my job to listen carefully to you and then partner with you to help reach your identified goals. Together we can work toward your self-empowerment, rediscover your capacity to make peace with the past, live well in the present, and create the future you desire.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
