I have been working with survivors of PTSD and trauma for some time. My working with domestic violence, sexual assault, and rape survivors has given me experience with trauma and the ramifications it has on someone's life. Currently, I have been working with veterans, from many different wars, on PTSD and how they can regain some normalcy back into their lives. I was recently trained to provide Eye Movement Desensitization Response (EMDR) which increased my capacity to assist individuals with the trauma they have endured.

From the outside, things couldn't be better. You have a life that looks happy and complete, but you feel unsettled. You second-guess your decisions and often feel that you are letting someone down. You sometimes feel resentful that you are going above and beyond and it's still never enough. I specialize in supporting high-achieving women who want to overcome self-doubt and overthinking to move forward with clarity and confidence.

‘If only I would have… I shouldn’t have… I should have known … Why wasn’t I more careful? How am I going to get through this?’ Having an emotional response to a serious experience like an accident, rape, or natural disaster is normal. Nevertheless, the everyday demands of life can be just as exhausting. Your boss has been pressuring you to work longer hours because of being short staffed. You feel guilty for working and not being able to spend time with your children, partner, other family and friends. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, with a focus on your personal self-care, may be complicated.

Do you want relief? Perhaps you keep busy, and when the day slows, your thoughts pick up. Painful memories and fears rush in. Your jaw clenches. You scroll. . . . . . . Are you seeking clarity? Perhaps you don’t know what you want. You wonder what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. You wonder how your patterns add to your pain and/or boost your well-being. . . . . . . Are you tired? Perhaps you’re exhausted. Your body tells you to rest, but you fear that if you lie down, you won’t be able to get back up, you won’t be able to care for those you love and who depend on you.

NOTE: Insurance not accepted. Even if scrolling through therapist profiles is as far as you get today, you’ve taken a step in bettering your relationship and yourself. Are you tired of the same cycle? Do you feel alone in your relationship? Maybe you’re on the brink of divorce, unsure if you or your spouse even want to try to make it work. Are you struggling with infidelity? Do you feel like you’ve lost each other, or like you keep having the same fight? Or like your spouse just doesn’t get it, no matter how many times you’ve tried to explain? Whatever the issue, it will keep recurring time and again unless we do the work to change.

A client who desires to accept partnership and engage in being open to change is the most ideal client. I prefer to work with adults and older adolescents struggling with addictions, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and trauma. I have a vast amount of experience working in the field of trauma. Due to my experience working in community mental health, I also work well with those with intense mental health and substance abuse treatment needs. I have worked both inpatient and outpatient experiences, resulting in my flexibility to help stabilize in a crisis and to work with individuals at any level.

The world today can be challenging for children and teens; it can be easy to fall into a pattern of anxious or depressed mood, feeling like you don't fit in, and juggling ever-changing environments. When working through these challenges, it is important to find a space that is comfortable and safe for learning and growing. I believe creating a safe and comfortable environment to challenge clients through creating realistic and achievable goals is crucial to therapeutic success.

If you're feeling lost, uncertain, overwhelmed, or down, you're in the right place. Therapy offers space to explore your emotions, understand your behavior, and gain clarity for the future. As a therapist, I imagine my work with clients as the two of us sitting side-by-side, digging for clues, sweeping away the dirt and debris, and collecting pieces that will ultimately help them create fuller, more integrated, healed selves.

Being in a relationship with a difficult person can be a taxing and painful experience. Initially, the relationship may seem promising, as difficult people can be charming and engaging. As time goes on though, their challenging nature begins to reveal itself. These relationships are often marked by emotional ups and downs, confusion, conflict, criticism, being belittled and blamed, and their refusal to take responsibility for their actions. We end up walking on eggshells trying to avoid their reaction, isolating from our family and friends, feeling helpless and anxious, and moments of calm become overshadowed with constant stress.

All of us have had experiences that challenge us and push us to our limits. When things are hard, we may start to wonder, “What’s wrong with me?” So often, though, what you’re going through is a natural human response to the stressors in your environment. You don’t need to be fixed; you’re not broken. In therapy we can work together to peel back the layers, take a closer look at your challenges, past or present, become rooted in who you are and the strengths you have so you can rise above and live a life you love.

All humans experience pain and stress in life along with the propensity to become entangled in distressing thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations when challenges arise. This often leads to perceptions, interactions, behaviors, and decisions that add further distress to both the mind and body. I attempt to facilitate increased mindfulness through improved insight, awareness, compassion, non-judgment and decreased entanglement in the distressing internal dialogue. I incorporate various theoretical perspectives including mindfulness, person-centered, cognitive and cognitive behavioral as I attempt to guide individuals toward increased inner peace.

Dealing with the aftermath of trauma and the struggles of mental health can feel heavy. It may feel as though you are completely alone in dealing with the difficulties in your life, but it does not have to feel this way. I work with teenagers and adults who all too often feel alone and hopeless and may have adopted unhealthy ways of coping through substance use or other self-destructive behaviors as a result. I use a strengths-based, person centered, humanistic approach and have been trained in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Taking the first step to address your trauma and mental health is scary, but I can help.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
