My passion is working with people as they rebuild after difficult life transitions or traumatic events, including but not limited to medical trauma and serious illness. I have experience working with dialysis, transplant, and cancer patients and their caregivers, and I have assisted many families as they navigate the widespread complications of medical issues, survivorship, and disability. I have also supported individuals as they learn to live with grief and loss.

Is everything overwhelming? Do you feel like things are out of control? Is it a struggle to get up every morning because you have so much to do, but you don’t even know where to start? Life is hard. Whether you have a family to take care of or live alone, dealing with life’s challenges can feel impossible. It can be hard opening up to someone about how you are feeling. That is why it is important to work with a therapist who is understanding and non judgmental. You don’t have to be alone in this. Reaching out is the first step in regaining your life. We want to work with you to face life challenges and help you be your best self.

Do you keep revealing to yourself and your loved ones that you are not the person you want to be? Have you kept yourself so hidden from others that now you have difficulty knowing who you are or what you want? Most likely, you have adapted over the years to challenges, maybe traumas, which have helped you survive. Except, those adaptations aren't serving you anymore, and they are actually making things worse. Perhaps you're afraid it's too late, that too much damage has been done. You believe the REAL YOU is hidden somewhere, you just need support finding yourself and living into your highest potential.

Struggling in your relationships?! I'm a relational psychoanalytic psychotherapist. Interpersonal Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (IPT) is an approach to psychotherapy that integrates psychoanalytic principles with a focus on interpersonal relationships. In this process, the goal is to identify and change maladaptive ways of relating to others. It explores how a person's interactions with others, past and present, contribute to their psychological difficulties. The therapy aims to help clients understand and navigate their interpersonal challenges, leading to symptom relief and improved functioning.

I want to work with you if you’re facing long-standing personality issues or relationship struggles growing out of them. Though not a psychoanalyst, I am strongly informed by psychoanalytic theory, particularly object relations and intersubjectivity. I like to work with individuals once or twice a week over periods of at least a year or two, and weekly with couples, focusing on the overlap between emotional issues that arise in the therapy room, in your life outside of therapy, and in your family of origin. I'm interested in concerns growing out of cultural difference, religious commitment, and immigration.

I think it's incredible that you're considering counseling! Whatever your reason, I would feel privileged to hear your story. I am someone that values dedication, compassion, and connection, which is why these elements are vital to how I approach therapy. Our connection with others begins with our connection to ourselves. With this in mind, each session it is my priority to create a space that is just for you, to help you find your way back to self, feeling refocused and calm, allowing you to show up for your loved ones and progress towards your goals and dreams for the future.

We often find ourselves repeating patterns in our thoughts and our ways of relating that keep us stuck and unable to move forward in life, preventing us from fully experiencing all that we would like. Past relationships and early experiences impact our current perceptions of our self, others, and the world. Therapy provides an opportunity to gain insight and understanding, as well as a space to explore and work through these patterns and places in life in the hope of gaining a greater sense of freedom and aliveness.

For all of us, change, loss, and challenge are inevitable parts of life, yet sometimes they seem to prevent our happiness and satisfaction. Coping and maintaining our well-being can become difficult or overwhelming, or our emotions seem too hard to handle alone. We wonder how we arrived where we find ourselves, and how we can move forward with confidence that things can get better. Perhaps anxiety, depression, struggling to communicate or connect are more familiar to us than contentment, feeling hopeful, and valued for who we are. Does this sound like what you are experiencing? At times like these, therapy can be a source of help.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
