Taking the step to seek therapy can be scary, intimidating, and overwhelming. I look forward to working with clients and couples who are brave enough to take this step to better themselves and their relationships. My focus primarily lies in bettering client's self-esteem through exploring their identity and personal experiences that have made them who they are today. My ideal clients may not know where or how to begin their journey of self discovery, but are willing to take the chance. I work with clients to create their own goals. I tend to work at the client's pace, pushing them when need be.

I believe a non-negotiable in a recovery experience is allowing someone to be authentically heard. It is a space that encourages emotional and physical detachment from challenges and an opportunity to intentionally integrate the desirable and undesirable events of life unfolding. Transparency and exploration can take place in a safe, confidential and non-judgmental holding environment. This process allows dignity and respect to navigate choices, solutions and empower discernment with action steps. Individuals can be truest to themselves and discover strengths in the duality of what they might have originally perceived as weaknesses.

Sometimes therapists are called the "wounded healers" because from their own life experiences they have decided to help people. I am proud to be one of those therapists. I have had a wealth of life experiences and losses and can truly empathize with my clients. I have experience in many areas of Social Work; including housing homeless people, coordinating adoptions, and advocating for pre-adjudicated youth. As a Clinical Therapist, I have worked in Home Based Therapy, Community, Residential, and Addiction. I firmly believe that these varied populations and organizations have enriched my integrative approach to therapy.

Life can be overwhelming sometimes, but you don’t have to navigate your healing journey alone! While making yourself vulnerable may seem scary, it is also one of the strongest indicators of courage. When faced with overwhelming emotions, it can feel comfortable to avoid those feelings; however, comfort and courage cannot exist at the same time.

"Just do what you can today." It can be as simple as getting out of bed or brushing your teeth. Your “best” each day is going to look different and that is okay. Reward yourself for the accomplishments you did, no matter how big or small. YOU are the main character to your story and no matter how you narrate it, I would be honored to walk alongside you in achieving your goals!

"Obstacles don’t have to stop you if you run into a wall. Don’t turn around and give up, figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” Every person has the ability to reach beyond the limits of what is possible, and we only reach these limits by working through them until we go beyond them into the impossible. Each step we take can move us towards achieving those goals.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
