Emotions can be confusing, relationships can be messy, and past experiences can negatively impact our present lives, but with proper coping strategies, we don’t have to remain stuck in maladaptive patterns. Change can be scary and people often remain frozen due to the fear of the unknown. Change and acceptance are two concepts that are diametrically opposed but with the right mind set they can actually work hand-in-hand in order to promote growth and healing.

Hello, I'm David. I have over 4 years of experience working as a Mental Health Counselor. I am passionate about helping people to live more satisfying lives. You are the only person, who has the correct solutions to the problems you are seeking help for, but when people have difficulty solving their problems, it is generally because the various aspects of the solutions are not recognized as being connected in a logical way. I can help you discover events in your life that have a significant effect on the way you feel now. I can assist you in using facts to discover the correct ways of interpreting these events.

Every pre-teen, teen, and young adult deserves a place where they can explore their story and feelings, without judgment or discrediting their experiences. I want to walk alongside the younger members of our community by helping work through issues related to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, negative self-talk, or those struggling to communicate thoughts and feelings in relationships.

I have seen my own life and many of my clients completely change the direction of their lives when they embark on the exciting journey of inner work that is needed and in that process find meaning in work, relationships and often with God.
I believe that all of us have some struggle with being addicted to something in life, if we are honest with ourselves. I have found that this develops out of a desire to numb emotional pain that we have not been able to work through. I read recently that 80% of us have experienced some type of trauma and have not worked through that underlying pain causing us to find ways to suppress it. In doing so we develop relational problems internally which then manifest with our family, our work, friends and others.

Everyone at times feels overwhelmed by life. The onset of a serious illness, the death of a loved one, and other events may have a profound impact on our daily lives. Traumatic events, whether expected or not, may affect our relationships with our spouse, family members, and others. They may also result in difficulties functioning at work and other aspects of our lives. Even welcomed life transitions, such as getting married, becoming a parent, embarking on a new career, or adapting to a new locality often bring surprising challenges that, if unmet, may accumulate causing disruptions in our lives.

I primarily treat depression, anxiety, and PTSD and I also have strong experience working with LGBTQIA individuals and am a trans affirming provider. I primarily see adult age clients above the age of 21 in my practice. My ideal client is someone who takes the lead in therapy and utilizes our time together in a way that makes sense to them based off of the difficulties they are experiencing. I enjoy helping my patients identify potential roadblocks or thought processes that may be holding them back from their desired lived experience.

Couples commonly struggle with one or more core areas: unproductive conflict, damaged trust, and emotional drift apart. Unproductive conflict can lead to significant problems just 4-7 years into the marriage. Drifting apart takes longer, often reaching a crisis point as the children start heading to college. I am a gay, married, cis-gender male with two kids, a pre-teen girl and a teenage son.
I am a LMHC and most of my work has been in the community mental health setting, meaning I have had a broad range of experiences working with everyone from children to older adults. I have worked primarily with those struggling in addiction, but because of my background I have worked with a broad range of treatment needs. I also really enjoy helping individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, and trauma concerns. I do primarily individual therapy, but do have experience working with couples as well. I am very relationally based and really focus on therapy as a collaboration between you and I, with your input leading the way.

I believe everyone has certain abilities and gifts that lead them to their calling. With that in mind, I became a therapist because I wanted to help people achieve their full potential in a world where too many people feel unsupported and alone. I enjoy working with individuals, couples, families and groups who are open to new ways of thinking and being, and motivated to change. Side note: I am an avid sports fanatic (including some unique ones; curling is one of my favorites!), and i am an enthusiastic dog parent.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
