Have you experienced neglect, abuse, or traumatic events? Abuse is often hard to understand as victims tend to be authentic, honest, and hopeful. The effects of abuse and trauma bring multiple effects as it creates real changes in the way the brain processes - you are not alone. Has navigating medical answers or conditions created many emotions or even a loss of identity? Has someone you love been struggling with medical conditions? Have medical conditions brought loss to you or your family through the loss of a loved one, divorce, disability, stillborn, or miscarriage?

As a child, teenager, and young adult, our brains are developing into who we will become. A lot of parents feel like they are doing everything they can to help their child but that they may need extra support. Sometimes collaboration with the child and parent makes a world of difference. My goal as a therapist is to meet people where they are to find what things make them feel supported and heard. In therapy, I provide a space for children & teens to be authentically themselves. We can talk about what they want their future to look like and feel confident to reach their goals.

My first consultation (30 minutes) is free so together we may decide what would be most helpful for you, to assess your needs, and determine what is best. For many lifestyle coaching or consulting is often best for those who want to improve life or problem solve as opposed to treatment for a diagnosable condition; while others may benefit more from counseling for concerns with anxiety, grief, or depression. Having spent many years in teaching and practice in metro Lou, I may also recommend colleagues who may be more helpful.

Most people who begin counseling are confronted with loss of some kind, whether it stems from serious marital difficulties, divorce, death or a life transition such as becoming parents, or helping young adults leave home.
Challenges in relationships, whether with spouses, partners, or with a parent and their children, help determine one's sense of security and well being at home. Work related demands and other difficulties can be additional stresses. It's vitally important that you, a potential client, and I develop rapport which will help us effectively address your concerns. I enjoy people and hope to do my best in responding to you as we build on what's already working well in your life at this time.

Loss can feel lonely, but therapy shouldn't feel that way.
You have a story and it matters. It's time for you to be the hero of your story! Sounds good right- but what about the losses you are dealing with? Loss comes in many forms: death; divorce or break up; job change; infertility; loss of who you are and where you fit; loss of feeling safe. I hear you and I see you. Whatever you are experiencing, it is time to find your voice and start a new chapter in your life geared toward version of you that you desire.

My areas of greatest expertise include relationships, identity development, family-of-origin, shame, and grief.
I believe that we all have needs that drive our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The need to connect, to be seen, to be heard, to succeed, to feel alive... Sometimes we are successful in getting our needs met, sometimes we are not. Often, we think there is only one way to be. We see and interpret our experiences with the patterns we establish in our early years. These ways of interacting in the world aren't always as effective or helpful as they may have been when we were young. Fortunately, we can change.

Clients may include partners considering divorce, marriage, remarriage, understanding the challenges of a blended family, individuals dealing with a death in the family, life transitions, low self-esteem, or children in foster homes.
Maybe you have been struggling with relationship issues, your new blended family, feeling anxious, depressed or experiencing trauma. Many individuals, particularly in marginalized communities, fear the stigma of exploring counseling as a form of self-care. My technique is to guide individuals, partners and families in a collaborative effort to develop healthy coping skills, improved communication and an enhanced self-concept to address many of life's challenging issues. Sometimes we just need a road map to help navigate adversity and bring about positive change,

I also specialize in helping women experiencing difficulties related to preconception planning, fertility challenges and loss, pregnancy/postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, and navigating motherhood.
The transition into motherhood is hard, and it becomes even harder when things don’t go as planned. Add in the pressure to perfectly “do it all” and it’s no wonder women are often left feeling stressed, burnt out, overwhelmed, anxious, and/or depressed. Many of my clients come to me with goals of finding peace, gaining confidence, healing from past wounds, and changing the patterns that are keeping them stuck. Whether you are just starting the process of trying to conceive, in the throes of infertility treatment, pregnant/postpartum, or years into child rearing - I get it, and I can help.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
