I believe that everyone deserves relief from emotional distress so that they can better manage their lives, participate in their community, and achieve their hopes and dreams. I also believe that people are much more than their diagnoses; both our minds and our bodies send us information to help us heal. I enjoy working with clients on whole person care by integrating physical health (diet, sleep, exercise) with a variety of therapeutic styles in order to meet a client where they are at in their journey of healing.

Ask the what ifs, dream big, explore those roots, and branch out into the unknown! Awaken your heart to release pain and patterns preventing you from living a more meaningful life.
You are worthy of peace and joy! If you are tired of feeling stuck, distracted, or minimizing yourself and thinking of all the things you should be doing or unsure where to start....stop "should-ing" on yourself! Depression, grief, anger and anxiety are normal human emotions. However, with most things in life, it’s all about balance and moderation. Sometimes things from the past, fears of the future's uncertainty or the way we are wired creates patterns that interfere with living a more meaningful, joyful, and peaceful life- one that includes connecting with the healing powers already within you!

I am also trained in EMDR therapy and often use this approach in tandem with IFS work with my clients in order to process overwhelming life experiences.
I believe in our innate capacity to grow and heal. Sometimes we need a little help along the way. I support that process with spacious curiosity and compassion. I am most passionate about working with adults struggling with relational or complex trauma, attachment issues, self-worth, and parenting. Deep connection to nature, to oneself, and to others is a large part of my personal and professional philosophies. To that end, I offer walking therapy sessions for those who prefer to be outside in nature to explore their inner awareness.

I use IFS, narrative therapy, buddhist psychology and bodywork to help you reconnect with your whole-ness, so that you can find out who you really are and what your purpose in life is.
The word psychotherapist is greek and means "Healer of the Soul". When you come into my office, I will not label you with anxiety, depression, addiction or any other disorder. You will hear me ask questions like: How is your addiction protecting you from pain? What do you not feel when depression numbs you? Once you witness and heal the wounds of your soul (you can also call it trauma), the symptoms (the 'disorder') can disappear. If you are interested in having a deeper understanding and awareness of your emotions, I will help you to develop a relationship with yourself that is characterized by curiosity, respect and compassion.

I love to utilize evidence based interventions, such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), and Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
My name is Swan Roberts, and I am a licensed therapist, clinical social worker. Before becoming a therapist, I was in the U.S. army for 2.5 years as a medic, 68w. I decided to become a therapist because I have always enjoyed helping people, and when I was getting out of the army, I had my own therapist to help me through that transition, which inspired me to follow this career path. I look forward to helping you on this healing journey. I have experience utilizing IFS, EMDR, and CBT with clients who are working through trauma, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and addiction issues.

I also enjoy helping couples overcome marital issues, as well as working with parents on how to better approach their children. Helping parents is something I enjoy. I can work through many different modalities to help you in areas of depression, anxiety, and other disorders. I have worked in counseling for nearly 30 years helping others at stages of life.

IFS therapy helps us learn that we have internal parts of ourselves, and how to talk to these subconscious parts.
Combining 15+ years of social work experience with evidence-based practice models of EMDR and IFS, my goal is to help you heal. Some people worry their problems are too big for therapy, how can talking help? And I agree, we do need to do more than just talking. Just as our bodies heal from physical injury, thankfully we do have an innate ability to heal mentally and emotionally too. So why hasn’t it happened already for you? Some cuts are deeper than others, and need stitches before your body is able to step up and heal on its own. EMDR is like that first stitch needed for the nervous system to be able to heal.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
