Does it feel like you can’t stop feeling anxious, overthinking, and sometimes self-doubt, and feeling “not enough” take over your life? Self-doubt and anxiety are overwhelming. It feels that you can’t stop overthinking and thinking about everything that can go wrong. You think about the bad things that can happen, the mistakes you can make, and the negative situations that can occur. Worry and overanalyzing take over, and you end up anxious and panicked. Questioning and doubting yourself makes you feel defeated. You overthink your abilities and self-worth, which makes you feel low and defeated.

No one had a perfect childhood, including you! Maybe your anxiety, depression, unhealthy coping, relationship struggles, and inner chaos aren't a character flaw, but a sign of untreated emotional wounds. Unless we actively attempt to make sense of our reactions and behaviors, they will continue to control us. Our bodies and minds remember the pain from the past and react to that pain whenever something reminds us of it. Increasing our awareness of these connections can be eye-opening and can allow us to shift how we perceive ourselves and our relationships. You are not to blame for the ways in which you learned to protect yourself.

One of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. There is so much value, understanding, and growth in developing a healthy relationship with yourself. If you think about it, the longest and most important relationship we will ever have is the one we have with ourselves. I am here to help you begin or continue that journey. I am the type of therapist you want to reach out to if you are struggling with perfectionism or low self-esteem, situations that make you feel anxious, depressed, and easily overwhelmed, or that feeling of being completely burned out and in need of self-care.

I have been deeply interested in the field of psychology from a very young age. My respect and commitment to this field have never wavered. For over 30 years, I have seen clients improve their lives in ways both large and small. Change may occur by learning new coping strategies, grieving a past loss, working through trauma or abuse, or by beginning to trust another.

Sometimes life presents us with difficult challenges and we feel lost. We may be haunted by trauma, feel stuck in relationships, have negative thoughts cycling around in our minds, and find that we are sabotaging ourselves. Changing life circumstances-both positive (like the birth of a child) or negative (loss of a job)-can cause anxiety and despair. I address these issues by fostering a warm and trusting therapeutic relationship where clients become more aware of their thoughts and feelings, make sense of their experiences, and move forward in their lives.

Having been shaped by an ethnic historical lineage, intergenerational joy and trauma in the nuclear family, and deconstructed western evangelical Christianity, I'm a 2nd generation Korean American who is continually evolving in unlearning socialized pressures from feeling "different" that often cause assimilation and/or dehumanization of self and others. I recognize strategies of survival that many of us learn to pick up to cope with surviving in systems and environments. I have years of experience working with young adults, and specifically LGBTQIA+ individuals and BIPOC navigating their multidimensional identities.

Our personal experiences and traumas can often leave a deep imprint on our physical and mental bodies, separating us from ourselves and our environment while impacting our sense of self, safety, and trust. The trauma symptoms can trigger painful memories from the past and take us away from the present moment. The struggle to maintain our daily activities and cope with stress can be overwhelming, impacting all areas of our lives. The practice of being present and aware of our experiences inside and outside of our bodies and in relationships with others can foster the integration of the parts that are separated due to trauma.

Working with moms and their families is my passion. While becoming a mother is often a long-awaited and magical experience, it can also be a vulnerable time for many of us. When we become mothers, we often re-experience childhood trauma which causes unresolved emotional pain to unexpectedly surface. These triggers may disrupt what would otherwise be a smooth transition into our parental role. Without understanding why, we may become increasingly anxious or depressed as new mothers and need additional support. Or we may feel that we have lost our identity somewhere between dishes, nap times, and ferrying kids to their activities.

Therapy can be a helpful tool to work through the difficulties of life, from daily life stressors or processing recent/past trauma. I have experience working with individuals that have been impacted by sexual violence, grief, issues in relationships or feelings related to depression, and anxiety. I also enjoy working with caregivers dealing with the difficulties of parenting.

I see people ages 17 to 90 for many differing issues some of which are long standing and others due to unexpected life events. I believe empathy, cultural sensitivity, and a good therapeutic relationship can remove barriers to finding solutions and will help to build strengths and skills. If you commit to the therapeutic work, I commit to helping you develop a new vision of what is possible for you; and I will help you learn practical skills to accept, change, and succeed at that vision. I believe we cannot change our past, but we can better understand and change how it impacts feelings, present reactions, and current options.

You're tossing and turning with your mind churning over What Ifs or moments that haunt. You feel stressed or overwhelmed; a sense of dread always lurking in the background. Maybe you're snapping at people or pushing them away. It might seem like everyone else is able to do things so much easier or better. Sometimes it seems like you're moving through thick fog. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
