I am an experienced practitioner. I connect well with my clients because I listen, without judgement; and let them free their minds of thoughts that bother them. My goal is for each client, each session, to feel changed, challenged and better about themselves.

Throughout my 25 years of practice, I have worked in many different settings with individuals of different ages, ethnicities, cultures, and socio-economic backgrounds.
I approach the therapeutic relationship from a client-centered lens with an integrative treatment approach. This means that I work with each client to develop a unique treatment plan to address their specific needs. I do not utilize a one size fits all approach and I believe that the client is just as important in this process as the therapist is. I examine all aspects of a client’s perspective including the systems that impact them. Treating the whole person is an important aspect for me in my therapeutic engagement with clients. I believe that every person has value and is worthy of kindness.

Hey there! My name is Alex. Life can be a tricky journey, sometimes it is full of excitement and fun, and other times it can really be tough. I don't believe we were created to walk this life alone, especially through those difficult moments. That's where therapy comes in. To be honest with you, I don't have the power to change you and that is not my goal. My job as a therapist is to come alongside you and help you rediscover yourself and your potential. With a greater understanding of who you are and where you have been, comes the opportunity for change to create a new normal.

Mental health, addictions, and co-occurring disorders are hu man problems that everyone deals with in their lives and should not be stigmatized.
My mission is to provide individuals, couples, and groups with high quality therapy that is evidence based, client centered, and trauma informed. I practice from elements of CBT, DBT, ACT, and Object relations. My approach to therapy is always unique to each and every client, as each person has a different lived experience that must be accounted for and tailored to fit. I do not believe in one size fits all therapy. As a clinician, I help treat the root causes of the problems in peoples’ lives. The objective is always to put out the fire, not just fan the smoke.

I coach boys soccer, have coached college wo men's tennis, and I perform professionally in the sport of footbag (hacky sack).
I work with clients of all ages with a wide variety of issues. My ideal client would be anyone (individual, couple, or family) who has identified an area(s) in life that needs to be worked on and has made the choice to work on that area(s). Simply making that decision sets the foundation for successful treatment.

My name is John Nesse. I received my Bachelors and Masters degrees in Social Work from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. While counseling can be intimidating, it presents many opportunities for growth, whether that be through pursuing greater self-awareness, challenging our thoughts about ourselves and others, or processing trauma and difficulties. My counseling approach is holistic and integrative and dependent on my client’s needs. I desire to create a space that is safe, educational, and supportive.

For much of the past decade, I have been privileged to walk alongside dying marriages, widowed mothers, burnt-out students, incarcerated persons, and many others as they recover a sense of wholeness and meaning.
Living well is an extremely difficult affair. Whether a hard relationship, a traumatic event, or a rough season of life that makes little sense - there is hope. As a lover of stories, I have found that the most potent ones often lie buried beneath layers of pain, guilt, and shame, where they subconsciously influence the way we think, feel, and connect with others. The process of healing can only begin as we tell the very stories that bring us pain and choose to love the parts of ourselves that may seem most frightening. Whatever you're facing, I know having a safe space to better understand your world will make it more manageable.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
