Life has many difficulties, and having someone there to walk with you through them can be invaluable. Many of my clients are adolescent individuals diagnosed with a developmental disorder or struggling with emotional issues. They need help managing their work and improving their mood. They may want to develop stronger relationships, improve their grades and work through communication difficulties with the adults in their life. They might also be looking for their purpose and need help developing their personal values. I can treat a diverse group of individuals in many different circumstances.

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor with over 24 years of experience working with adolescent teens, families, and young adults.
For parents and students alike, adolescence can be a turbulent time. Watching our children struggle can be stressful. It takes a lot of patience, understanding and adjusting to meet the needs of kids in this age group. It's not uncommon for parents to feel that they are engaging in one power struggle after the next...or perhaps feeling a sense of guilt, frustration or helplessness, as they start to question the effectiveness of their parenting and/or the overall emotional well-being of their son or daughter.

Reaching out for help can oftentimes be one of the hardest steps in therapy. Many of us function under the belief we should be able to figure it out on our own. Unfortunately that’s just not always true. We often build walls and create patterns just to survive. My goal is to help my clients understand all parts of themselves and uncover what parts may be holding them back; while learning tools to help break these disruptive cycles. There are no bad parts, and you (or your teen) aren’t broken. I’d love to help, feel free to reach out whenever you’re ready.

Not being able to understand or effectively communicate with your child can be even scarier. Many of us reach a point where we feel stuck in our lives or our relationships. We realize that what we have done in the past to manage stress, to cope, to heal, to move forward is no longer working the way it used to and we need new strategies. As an individual and family therapist who has worked for 6+ years in two diverse metropolitan areas (New York and Chicago), my work has focused on family relationships, identity exploration, adult and adolescent mental health issues, parenting, social skills, grief, loss, and other life traumas.

My ideal client is anyone willing to come to counseling and be open to the process! Regardless of where a client may be starting from or what they’re hoping to accomplish, I believe that anyone who is willing to show up and engage in the therapeutic process can benefit, and I am happy to guide and support them on their journey. I believe I would be an especially good fit for those clients who want to learn more about themselves and the “why” behind their feelings, behaviors, and thoughts; hope to develop a deeper, more genuine connection with themselves and others; and can appreciate some gentle challenging when appropriate.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
