My approach to therapy is not always your traditional approach. I utilize many evidence-based therapy modalities while also making our time together interesting and fun. Many times deep healing work can occur without even realizing it. You may find yourself feeling an array of emotions from crying to laughing as we work together. I believe that there is deep healing power in laughter.

I have served the Peoria area in various therapeutic roles over the past 8 years working with children and adolescents in residential and community-based programs. These experiences have provided me with a wealth of clinical knowledge and anecdotal experiences to provide each client with a holistic approach that addresses all factors of their functioning. Through this, I am able to match clients with their identified goals and actualize their ideal self to lead healthy, fulfilling lives. Every client has the capability to achieve their goals, and I provide the framework to assist them in reaching these goals.

I work well with clients from all walks of life who have identified that something is not working for them and they would like to enhance their "tool set." While I am able to work with a wide range of issues, the most common that tend to present themselves are related to changes in life, anxiety, or depression. I believe that each person tries to do the best they can with what they have. Sometimes what we have is not quite enough for a problem and we need to learn a more effective way of dealing with issues. It is not in my ability to change a person, I only help them change themselves to the degree they are willing.

I use cognitive and dialectical behavior therapy approaches to help those who are seeking to make positive changes in their lives.
I know how challenging it can be to reach out and start the process of therapy. I enjoy working with clients who experience a variety of needs from their therapist. This includes processing traumas, minimizing depressive symptoms, more effectively managing symptoms of anxiety, and more! It is important to come into a counseling setting with an open mind, and to remember that therapy is a very vulnerable process. Developing trust within a counseling relationship is an important foundation to reaching your goals in the counseling setting.

I utilize techniques and educate clients on skills formulated from a cognitive behavioral approach and a dialectical behavioral approach, of which I have personally employed in my own journey.
You are a product of your decisions, not a victim of your circumstances. I believe that each individual has the ability to take control of their life’s journey by improving from the past, embracing their current, and shaping their future.

I believe that authenticity is an essential tool in the therapeutic process. I use an integrative approach with a focus on Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I work with my clients to identify what their meaningful life looks like and to set goals that will move them towards that meaningful life. I believe in empowering my clients to advocate for themselves both within the therapeutic relationship and in their everyday lives. I see my clients through a strengths-based lens and encourage them to explore and connect to their strengths as a resource for healing.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
