My ideal client is any adolescent, young adult, or couple that is willing to seek assistance, grow, and develop new strategies to address concerns they may be having with depression, anxiety, communication, addictions, or other adjustment they are struggling with that they need assistance. In working with clients it is important that a relationship is established where the client feels comfortable, safe, and secure. After a relationship is formed it is my goal to help guide the client/couple/family in developing strategies by challenging them using different therapeutic modalities that work best with their identified goals.

Making the decision to change is often difficult as there is comfort in holding onto old ways of thinking or patterns of behavior even when they are ineffective and no longer serve us well. My goal is to help guide you through the change or healing process. My therapeutic approach is supportive and collaborative. I work with adults and older adolescents with anxiety, depression, and mood disorders. I also have significant experience working with individuals experiencing life transitions, relationship/marital issues, stress management or coping skill difficulties, grief and loss, abuse and trauma, and substance use disorders.

I am honored to work with clients who are willing to share their stories. I am open to clients who are ambivalent about counseling, maybe coming for the first time, and to those motivated for support. I work with clients dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief/loss, identity and meaning, faith/spiritual and family/relational concerns, and those who might consider understanding how the past impacts them now. I have valued my diverse work in the community (group homes, therapeutic day school, outpatient counseling and university counseling center) as I desire to connect clients to resources and their community as needed.

We specialize in working with anxiety disorders for all age groups.
I work with clients to help them live their valued life using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness skills. Change is constant and is part of life. With change comes stress and anxiety. Rather than simply reacting, which leads to a spiral of further stress and anxiety, I teach my clients coping tools so they are able to respond in a way that is productive and in their control, minimizing stress and anxiety. I specialize in working with clients struggling with depression, anxiety and other mood disorders, OCD, ADHD, postpartum issues and insomnia.

Good mental health is hard to achieve in isolation. I commend you for reaching out to share your troubles. I offer you a safe place to feel. Trusting is especially hard if you've endured more than most. Learning how to deal with what's inside is confusing if nobody taught you as a kid how to make sense of it all. Therapy is a unique process where as you dare to let a safe person experience the hurt alongside you, you'll feel less alone,"weird" and overwhelme of what's happening. When we feel less alone, we'll have courage to try what it's like to practice responses that won’t get us deeper into depression, shame and anxiety.

Client-centered is always Kim's approach during a session. This allows a client to open up at their own pace. She takes time to build rapport with her clients, which creates a space for clients to process complex feelings and emotions. A few areas of specialization for Kim are substance abuse, anxiety, and family conflict.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
