Most of my work is value-oriented and based in ecological/systems, existential, relational, behavioral, and transpersonal schools of thought.
My orientation towards psychology was born out of my own difficulties in life; I want to make sure that those who seek help are able to get it. That said, I do best with clients who are at their worst, rock bottom. Fear of death and existential concerns, intrusive thoughts and urges, powerful and intense emotions, chronic stress and fatigue, loss of sense of self, lack of meaning and purpose in life, not being able to tell what's real and what isn't, regardless what it is. Whatever is your breaking point is the point at which you can change your life forever, I can help you through that process. The only way out is through.

I enjoy working with individuals of any age, couples, and families who are experiencing issues with grief, depression, anxiety, impulsiveness, anger, life transitions, trauma, divorce, attention, behavior, Christian faith, and relationships.
Successful counseling occurs when you find a therapist you can connect with, who makes you feel heard and values your thoughts and goals for the future. A positive therapist who enjoys learning who you are, and building on your strengths. If you allow me to walk with you in your struggles and victories, I will give you fair and honest feedback, and will challenge you to attain your goals. My Masters Degree from Aurora University, my rich work experience, as well as my own life journey give me valuable insights and wisdom that help me relate to my clients.

Congratulations. You might not know it but you have taken the first big step in your mental health journey. By researching Mental Health Professionals you have made a conscious decision to heal your mind and have acknowledged that you are worth that healing. You may be asking yourself, “How do I know what therapist is best for me? Where do I even start in finding the right fit?” The answers to those questions are simple. Find a Counselor that is like minded. Pick someone that you feel will connect with you. I advise prospective clients that success in the therapy room comes when people connect-not through degrees and certifications.

There are varieties of reasons why people seek counseling, but no matter what the motivation, I believe they want and need to be accepted right where they are. I approach each person's unique story from a nonjudgmental position, as I seek to understand their perspective in an effort to help them overcome their challenges. Developing a therapeutic relationship is important as the client and I work together in deciding, developing, and pursuing agreed upon objectives. I consider it a privilege to serve others and help them for a time on their life's journey.

I work with individuals and couples both in person and online, via telehealth. I've worked frequently with trauma and have received EMDR and Gottman Level 1 training. I believe in the power of perspective and utilizing internal strengths to overcome life’s difficulties and hardships. Therapy is a great way to explore what has been holding you back in life and find new pathways to changes in your life that you desire. I know this process can be difficult and I work hard to ensure that my office is a judgment-free safe space where you can explore yourself and the process.

Conflict with your partner or spouse? Unproductive communication? Recurrent episodes of anxiety or depressed mood? Overconsumption of alcohol and/or substances in an attempt to self medicate against your out of control emotions? These and many other mental health challenges are both treatable and resolvable. In my 35+ years as a therapist to residents of the greater Fox Valley area I have observed that most of my clients choose therapy when they have utilized and exhausted all coping tools and problem solving strategies. As therapist it is my role to facilitate the increase of both coping tools and problem solving skills.

I specialize in the treatment of children, adolescents and their families struggling with emotional regulation and behavioral control due to a mood disorder, Autism, ADHD, or life stress.
We are a child and family psychology practice. My associates and I believe in a cooperative treatment experience where client and therapist share responsibility for the identification and mutual direction of problem solving strategies. We are convinced of the importance of involving significant others in the treatment process when possible. Often children and adolescents react to problems in the context of school and family. We value feedback from teachers and staff professionals and look for collaborative relationships in pursuing the best needs of the child or adolescent.

Behavioral Issues Therapists

What happens in therapy for behavioral issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behavior issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioral issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioral issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioral concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behavior management, often used when the underlying cause of behavior issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioral issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behavior issues?

Studies show that therapy for behavior issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behavior later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behavior. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
