As an Advanced Grief Recovery Method Specialist, I offer help to people in dealing with grief either online or in an office setting.
I empower people to let go of the pain, loneliness, and isolation of grief so they can live more in the present and be themselves again. I also help individuals and couples look beyond the problems that bring them to therapy, and identify the changes they can make to restore happiness and harmony to their lives. Utilizing the education, support, and exploration that take place in therapy, clients leave with greater confidence and hope, and with new tools to address the challenges they face. I also offer articles and videos on my Website to inform and educate: See www.joedubowski.com/

My specialities include the following: anxiety, depression, grief, substance abuse, and autism.
I am licensed Clinical Psychologist. My mission is to help individuals uncover their true potential and lead lives that are more connected and fulfilling. I'm here to tell you that you don’t have to be controlled by your thoughts and you can bounce back from adverse life events. With cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), you can challenge the thoughts and behaviors that are holding you back. I want you to use your emotions instead of being used by them and to use your strengths to find and enjoy more things you are naturally good at. Becoming resilient will allow you to cope effectively with both negative and positive life events.

Many of us struggle with difficulties in relationships, personal grief, and emotional or physical pain. We often see these as obstacles to healing with a hopeless outlook of change. We need answers, reasons, and certainty to soothe our longings or access "progress." So often this shrouds our ability to slow down and look inward. My aim is to empower you to navigate these complexities with courage and resilience. Through a holistic approach that addresses both emotional and physical patterns formed throughout a lifetime of relationships and experiences, you can learn to honor your story the way no one else can. Come as you are.

As each of us goes through life, we will experience difficult transitions. It could be the loss of a loved one or pet to death through disease, accident, or natural causes. Personally, you or a loved one may face cancer or other life-threatening situations. Life’s transitions are challenging. In all cases, you will need support from family, friends, and professionals. My professional experience includes working with adolescents and adults from diverse backgrounds facing challenging transitions in their lives. I have supported clients confronting these transitions while witnessing them gain greater self-awareness.

I treat people with depression, anxiety disorders, relationship issues, grief and loss issues, and those wanting to understand more about how their childhood years have impacted their personality and functioning.
I've worked in the mental health field since 1980. I look at therapy as a collaborative enterprise between client and therapist, with the aim of improving quality of life. I value a gentle, accepting way of looking at life problems, with an emphasis on understanding, rather than judging or condemning, oneself and others. I value curiosity as a valuable asset in the therapeutic process and I enjoy working with clients who can be curious about themselves and their lives. I work with the client to identify new skills, behaviors, or attitudes that can facilitate desired changes.

A feeling of being in darkness, restlessness, or fear might be a sign of anxiety, depression, trauma, unresolved grief, or of a transition in your life. Those conditions may lead a person into being less functional, non productive, or struggling in making decisions. I believe that each of us possess an inner strength that is capable of bringing healing, restoration, and life. It sometimes may just be very difficult to recognize and to access this inner strength. We might long for relief, to raise our self esteem, a higher functionality, productivity, or just to be able to simply see the light at the end of tunnel.

Congratulations! You are looking into therapy and contemplating making changes in your life. If feelings of sadness, anxiety, relational difficulties, grief or past trauma get in the way of your happiness let's work together to address them. I will respond you in couple hours after you contact me. Effective counseling not only can change the mind but can change the brain as well. Counseling can support the building of new neuron connections! That process is called “neuroplasticity,” I can assist you in exploring what led you here and how to make changes to feel better.

I have been a therapist for 14 years and worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings with children, adolescents, and adults. In the past several years, I have focused on working with adults who suffer from anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, poor self-esteem, life transitions, abuse, generational trauma, infertility, and parenting. Together we gain insight into their lives by identifying changes they would like to make, how the past impacts the present, and work towards healing and happiness. I work with all races and religions and am aware of my privilege, which is open for discussion as to how it will impact our therapy.

During my 17 years of clinical experience, I worked with individuals, couples and families seeking therapy due to mental health concerns, behavioral problems, trauma, grief, and life transitions.
I understand that seeking counseling can be intimidating and may create many fears. This is why it is important to me to provide a safe, caring and nonjudgmental environment. I appreciate client's efforts and attempts to help themselves and I'm proud to be part of that process. I invite each client to be involved in the process of goal setting and treatment planning, which is specifically designed to each individual, based on their symptoms, needs and past experiences. Therapy is a process during which I address not only your symptoms but also any additional life stressors and challenges.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
