My integrative approach is rooted in Trauma-informed modalities such as Attachment, EMDR, IFS, and Somatic based theories that foster intimacy with the self and in relationships.
Many of us struggle with difficulties in relationships and carry deep wounds ungrieved. We often see these as obstacles to healing with a hopeless outlook of change. We need answers, reasons, and certainty to soothe our fears or access "progress." So often this shrouds our ability to slow down and look inward. My aim is to empower you to navigate these complexities with courage and resilience. Through a holistic approach that addresses both emotional and physical patterns formed throughout a lifetime of relationships and experiences, you can learn to honor your story the way no one else can.

I am here to walk the journey alongside you. Life presents many challenges and adapting to a new "normal" is hard and perception can be glum. It feels like your sense of direction is confusing and uncertain. Relationships have lost their meaning, abundance and joy feel unattainable, and support stands at too far a distance for you to feel grounded in love and security.

Feeling steady and rooted in relationships with ourselves and others can help establish a foundation for a greater sense of wellbeing. Through a relational and attachment-focused approach, I support people hoping to have a deeper understanding of themselves and their connections with those around them (friends, family, community, etc.). This may include exploring cultural and ancestral identity, which is another component of someone better knowing who they are and how they engage with the world around them. I am also here for helping professionals seeking support through compassion fatigue and feeling overworked from their careers.

While always remaining client-centered, approaches I use include Emotion Focused Therapy for couples, Somatic Experiencing Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapies (including DBT and ACT), and relational interventions.
Everyone needs relationships. Whether you're looking for a safe, healing relationship within which to explore and repair past hurts or trying to mend or strengthen existing relationships, I'm here to help. I believe personal growth requires a supportive and secure environment, and I've been told my warmth and humor have put clients at ease as we seek to understand what they are wanting from therapy in order to increase meaning or satisfaction in their marital, parenting, family, friendship, work and spiritual relationships. Walking with clients as they let go of old patterns and learn new ways to live more authentically is an honor.

I make use of Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Internal Family Systems therapy, as well as other experiential and somatic approaches.
My name is Annie Musgraves and I am a therapist on staff with Bristlecone Therapy. I know that it can be hard to consider going to see a therapist. Sometimes we have parts of us that want the support therapy can offer and then sometimes we have other parts that aren't so sure about the idea of therapy. If this sounds like you, I want you to know that all parts of you are welcome in my office, especially those parts of you that may be unsure, standoffish or fretful about showing up.

I specialize in treating Trauma (single event, long-term and attachment) with experiential therapies, including EMDR & Somatic Experiencing. These interventions recognize the need to go beyond changing your thoughts and focus on helping people regulate the body sensations and emotions that continue to be experienced. For example: a person may know that a traumatic event is over and yet continue to feel the emotion of anxiety and the body sensation of muscle tension (never truly relaxing or feeling safe). This can activate an impulse to run away from situations, become angry/defensive or shut down (depressed/ avoidant/dissociative)

What would it be like to listen to what your body is asking for right now? Including the body within the psychotherapy process is a necessity because our body carries the memories of our personal life experiences. This somatic approach allows for a more holistic and integrated healing process, as it addresses the physical aspects of our mental and emotional struggles. By paying attention to bodily sensations, movements, and reactions during therapy, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our patterns.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
