How can two perople do better together> Or three? Or a family? See me!.
I love relationships - family relationships, faith relationships, work relationships. It hurts when a relationship breaks down. That's why I started studying marriage and family therapy. It was so fascinating that I completed all of the coursework and then an 1800 hour clinical internship, even though only 1300 hours were required. Since then I've helped hundreds of couples and individuals with highly effective, very inexpensive therapy - it's the most satisfying thing I do. I'm available seven days a week. I would LOVE to help you with my faith-based therapy. - Dr. Chuck Olson

Skip has experience helping adults with a wide range of issues: depression (including how men may experience mental health struggles differently than women), bipolar disorder, stress/anxiety, PTSD, marriage and family therapy, and young adults.
Skip's ideal client is not determined by their diagnosis, problems, or goals. Rather, it is someone who may be afraid or angry, but is still WILLING to work - because they are tired of hurting and struggling, and want their life to change. With a primary focus on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy concentrating in Mindfulness, clients are able to process the experiences from their life on deeper and more meaningful levels. Then, Skip works together with clients to identify ways to avoid emotional responses (like anger, defensiveness, or fear) and come up with real-world solutions to help clients achieve their goals.

My 22 years of experience can help to empower you with the coping skills you need to face the aftermath of trauma, anxiety, family, marital, parenting, and acculturation issues.
Life isn't easy and we are not born all knowing. Throughout our life span, we face exciting and terrifying situations that impact the way we function every day and how we interact with others. Then, we feel like we are the only ones suffering, and feelings of loneliness emerge. Our first reaction is to hide and portray that we are doing fine. Then we try dealing with the problem on our own. Later, we find ourselves feeling overwhelmed. We start experiencing extreme difficulties just trying to deal with simple daily life tasks. This is where I come in!

You have decided enough is enough, or you have friends or family who have suggested "working through some things with someone.
You’re feeling stuck, unhappy with where your life is, afraid to make the next decision, or afraid that you’ve already made the wrong decision. You fight with the inner voice of doubt and anxiety every day and don’t know where to turn. Maybe you're stuck in a harmful habit like gambling, excessive social media, or excessive porn usage. You may look like you have it all together in your career, your relationships, and to anyone looking at your life from the outside, but you don’t feel successful. You’re tired of working so hard to keep up appearances, life shouldn’t be this hard.

I am an experienced Therapist with a long-standing reputation for establishing and maintaining a safe and trusting environment where an Individual/Couple/ Family and/or Group can give voice to their past and present narratives, identify Strengths and Vulnerabilities and address the Body/Mind Connection. Over the years, Ive found that making the decision to talk about what is heavy on your mind/heart will put you on the path to self-awareness and the opportunity to develop a true relationship with yourself and in turn, with others.

Perhaps one of the following services would benefit you or your family in addition to individual counseling: an anxiety group for children that includes a parent component, a parent support group, or sibling support groups.
Are you exhausted by the challenges you face - be that domestic violence, navigating the foster care system, a child with special needs such as Autism or ADHD, or with your own special needs? Maybe you struggle with a mood disorder, depression, or self injury. Or perhaps you are seeking a therapist who shares an understanding of your struggle from a Christian perspective. Allow me to support you in your journey. I encourage involvement of family members and others in your support system in treatment when possible and appropriate. And there is no situation I consider too challenging.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
