I will strive to help you gain insight, clarity and acceptance in your life. Counseling can help you create the life you desire and deserve. It takes courage to take the first step to become an even better version of you!

Whether you are coming to terms with the fact that you need to work a relationship, or you realize that you’ve been different your whole life and its time to learn how to live your best life, I’m here.
As a therapy client myself, I can tell you it takes courage to find a therapist. Life is not neat and tidy. We all need help. Not judgement, not lectures, not hearing people say ‘learn to cope.’ Healing is not a linear journey, it’s a process. I can be your partner in that process. You are the expert of your life! I’m a sounding board to help you find the solutions within! This is the case regardless of whether are dealing with depression, anxiety, communication issues, trauma, or grief.

I have experience working with couples and individuals.
Are you seeking a space to foster personal growth and improve your relationship with yourself and those you love? How about gaining the tools to set and accomplish important goals in your life? I seek to create a safe, secure, and productive therapy environment for all, especially clients who are often under-served in the therapy world such as people of color, black women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, those in polyamorous or open relationships, and those who are a part of the BDSM/Kink community. My style of therapy is a base of person centered theory and interpersonal theory and is flexible to meet the needs of her clients.

I enjoy working in a number of modalities, including individual, couples, families and group dynamics.
I strive to touch the lives of the people I serve in a way that leaves them feeling valued, respected, and better able to face their personal challenges and struggles. I work from a strength based perspective. This simply means I encourage people to reconnect with their inner strengths and passions learning to engage strengths and values more effectively. Basically, it is often a matter of identifying what is already working for an individual or family and doing more of it. Through our strengths, we have the best potential to overcome our challenges.

Through the last several years, I have found working with trauma survivors, betrayal trauma, couples, women with postpartum struggles, and first responders is where I am at my best providing care.
Stepping into the therapy office is not the easiest process. I hope to create a space of warmth for you to be able to process through whatever brought you into therapy. After having been "on the couch" for awhile as the client, I know finding the right fit in a therapist is incredibly important. Together, we will work to find what feels right for you.

I am currently providing individual, couples, and group therapy in a private practice setting.
I believe that we all develop and possess our own unique stories that give our lives meaning. We are each the authors and experts of our own stories, but sometimes we can get stuck in stories that restrict our growth and possibilities. I strive to provide a safe and non-judgmental place for you to explore those stories and to rewrite them so that they better support your goals and values, empowering you to live out those values in meaningful and fulfilling ways.

As a therapist and human being, I believe in the power of counseling and its success at different times in one's life, whether for the purpose of personal growth or to address more serious mental health concerns or problematic behaviors. As a foundation to the counseling relationship, I help clients and families understand the process of therapy and that all people, children and adults, grow and heal on their own time. I believe that by providing a safe and supportive environment, clients are able to make positive, lasting change.

Serving the central Illinois community for over a decade, her areas of expertise are trauma related to interpersonal or family violence, sexual assault and abuse, adoptive and foster care, school problems/workplace problems, parenting, and couples therapy.
Dr. Venus Evans-Winters is a licensed clinical social worker, trauma professional, and professor. She draws upon multiple therapeutic and psychoeducational techniques (e.g. cognitive, dialectical, and reality therapies) to meet clients' mental health and socio-emotional needs. A native of Chicago and representative of the hip hop generation, she helps culturally and linguistically diverse clients cope with chronic stress and trauma. Her practice is influenced by Adlerian theory and centers culturally responsive approaches to practice because we know that culture is a major influence on one's perception of stress and self-efficacy.

I have developed my clinical skills over 30 years of working with individuals, couples, families and groups in agencies, small group practices as well as in solo private practice.
Are you ready to stop letting that past hurt control your life? I welcome a client who is aware of being in pain but doesn't understand what it's about, how it got there, or how to heal the pain. One who is sick and tired of the struggle and that things never change. I know their pain isn't hopeless nor does it have to be permanent. I have great respect for my clients who risk the vulnerability of the therapeutic process and risk both the pain and the hope of the healing process.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
