Live the life you want! In 20+ years of working with clients, I have developed a clinical style based on how I would like to be treated if I were the client; a respectful, relaxed atmosphere providing excellent care - sometimes even fun. I work collaboratively to clarify my client's problems and resources, to address their concerns and help them get to where they want to be in life. I don't label my clients and often see myself as a type of teacher or coach. Additionally I worked for 7 years in a major corporation and understand the real world.

Life gets complicated. You have been trying all that you know how to do to make things better for yourself or for someone you love but have run out of energy, ideas or both. You may have a relationship with someone you love but just can't seem to get along. You may be a parent trying to best figure out how to help a child or teen who is having problems. You may feel burdened by sadness, fear or stress.Or, perhaps you have old wounds that seem to keep interfering with you creating the life you want.

Sometimes we need help finding a sense of balance. Anxiety, depression, systemic inequality, a transition, school/work, and navigating identity are just a few of the issues that can challenge our well-being everyday. While difficulties are an inherent part of life, my goal as a therapist is to help you develop skills to navigate moments of instability, find clarity in your values, and what truth means to you and your identity.

In sports, it is 90% mental and 10% physical.
An athlete's life is different from other people. Does the stress of being an athlete sometimes makes you feel overwhelmed and alone? Are you expected to be almost perfect and fear you won't measure up and will get ridiculed? Are you afraid of not being "good enough" and coaches losing confidence in you? Does worrying about your performance leave you feeling overanxious? Do you have moments of overwhelming sadness but are afraid to let anyone know because you're an athlete and athletes can't show any signs of weakness, all the while feeling stressed out with no one to go to?

As a clinical psychologist and physical therapist, I offer a unique approach to help you get into the Zone so that you can improve your sports performance.
Shaquille O'Neal says, "Dr. Lombardo is my head coach for happiness." Every truly great athlete gets coached in not only physical skills but also the mental side of their sport. Why? Because it helps take them to the next level. Whether it is improving confidence, coping with the pressures of competition, managing emotions, increasing your chance of being recruited, dealing with setbacks/errors or recovering from an injury, sports psychology can help you enhance your performance.

While I have worked with individuals who experienced a wide range of difficulties, I come to you with an expertise in sports performance, anxiety, and depression.
Stressed about the Election? I have immediate openings available for new clients who need support at this time. • It’s easy for our inner critic to increase feelings of uncertainty, fear, and disconnection from ourselves. Our thoughts are constantly telling us stories that can be hard to believe, and we experience this spectrum of emotions that can be tricky to navigate. Rather than internalizing, reacting, or avoiding these negative thoughts and emotions, developing self-compassion and leaning into the discomfort can help you embrace all of your experiences and begin to shift your life in a way that is meaningful to you.

If you’re a student, athlete, teacher, or coach, it’s very common to feel anxious, overwhelmed, and burnt out. You’re probably exhausted, and you might be finding less fulfillment in the classes, sports, or work you once enjoyed. You’re likely juggling various roles at once, putting your own needs last, and possibly turning to unhealthy ways of coping. The pressure to be perfect and to please everyone else might feel so heavy that your focus and performance are starting to slip. Maybe you realize this isn't sustainable and that something needs to change, but you feel stuck.

I help my clients with issues including anxiety, depression, sports and work performance, managing public life, life transitions, identity development, family and relationship conflict, racial issues, and spiritual/religious confusion.
It takes a lot of courage and vulnerability to enter therapy, especially with the specific intention of facing whatever led you to seeking services. Ultimately, I believe therapy is about getting to know yourself better, developing strategies for creating and maintaining life balance, and acquiring new skills that help you feel confident facing everyday life. If this is your first time entering therapy or you are returning for a new experience, I'd love to serve as a tool to help you reach your goals.

I have worked extensively through the years with clients who struggle with severe and debilitating anxiety, performance anxiety, social anxiety, athletic performance, e- sports performance, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), emotional expression, and communication difficulties.
I’m a big believer that therapy doesn’t have to be buttoned-up or artificial. It should be comfortable and real. I prefer to facilitate a casual, collaborative, & affirming environment where we can openly discuss anything that’s on your mind and empower you to explore who you are and how you relate to others. I specialize in working working with athletes (professional and amateur), e- sports athletes, musicians, poly relationships and fellow therapists in individual, relationship, and family contexts.

I work with children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and families who struggle with issues of anxiety, depression, confidence, and interpersonal relationships. The number one aspect of successful treatment is a strong/trusting relationship. I connect with clients through sports metaphors, movies, real life scenarios, and getting to understand their interests. Everyone has a story so I believe it is important to include family during phases of treatment, to best understand the client's story. In addition, I believe the family is a necessary part of the therapy team, therefore family members are included in phases of treatment to ultimately help my client reach their goals.

My focus is on helping individuals, couples, and families navigate trauma and anxiety while also fostering personal growth, emotional well-being, and enhancing sports performance.
Are you feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, past trauma, or specific challenges as an athlete? Whether you’re a teenager navigating the pressures of school, an adult balancing life’s responsibilities, or a couple facing communication barriers, the journey can be daunting. If you’re looking to regain control and find peace amid the chaos, you’re not alone. Many individuals and families encounter moments when everything feels unmanageable. Past experiences can overshadow the present, and the pressures of performance, both in sports and daily life, can be overwhelming. It is normal to feel lost or unsure, and you deserve support.

Sports Performance Therapists

How does sports psychology work?

Sports psychology helps athletes identify and overcome challenges, such as perfectionism or a fear of failure, and improve key mental skills, such as confidence or concentration. By applying principles and techniques from psychology, such as goal-setting, visualization, positive self-talk, and emotion regulation, sports psychologists help athletes improve their performance on the field and their well-being overall.

How long does treatment for a sports-related problem take?

The duration of sports psychology treatment depends on the athlete’s individual challenges, goals, the complexity of the interventions used, and even on the length of the season. A performance anxiety issue may be treated with a short-term treatment, like Cognitive behavioural therapy, while issues such as depression, substance abuse, or severe anxiety may require longer-term treatments.

How effective is treatment for sports performance problems?

Sports psychology has been shown to improve performance and help athletes manage their emotions. Sports psychology can be effective in boosting performance, team dynamics, and injury rehabilitation. Over the past decade, nearly every professional sports team in every major sport has added a sports psychologist to its staff. Many colleges have done the same, and even some high school programs have done the same. Olympic hopefuls may consult with sports psychologists starting in elementary school.

What are the limitations of sports psychology?

Sports psychology may have several limitations. Every athlete is unique and may respond differently to sports psychology treatments. Therapy can help an athlete reach their potential; it can help athletes cope with injury and pain, but it cannot change the physical limitations that may be affecting an athlete’s performance.
