I have been in practice since 2002, helping adolescents, adults, couples, families and groups. I work collaboratively with clients from a biopsychosocial perspective, using the interrelationship between the mind and body as a focus for treatment. As a medical psychologist on hospital staff, I diagnose and treat psychological issues in outpatient or inpatient therapy.

I passionately and compassionately care for the emotional well-being and behavioral health of my individual, couple, family and group clients for over 20 years. I draw upon unique combinations of clinical principals and innovative methods to best support all people within our vastly diverse community. As a generalist, I work with individuals with a wide range of concerns from depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, bipolar, and addiction, to life problems in relationships, trauma, grief, loneliness, anger management, stress and career choices, etc... Clients get results with me because my approach is practical, creative, and empowering, and I work hard to help clients gain new tools to overcome their challenges. I am a licensed psychologist with over a decade of experience providing individual, couples, group counseling, psychological evaluations, and teaching/training in university settings. My style of therapy is warm, genuine, attentive, and sensitive to clients' unique needs.

I am committed to helping others choose to live a full life. I believe that psychotherapy can be a powerful tool toward reaching this goal, by creating the insight to grow, the space to heal, and the courage and self-reliance to foster change. Dr. Fortman serves as clinical faculty at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and in full-time private practice. A former member of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Institute (SOGI) and staff psychologist at the Center on Halsted, he continues to provide supervision to graduate students. He trained at The Ohio State University, University of Virginia, and Sarah Lawrence College and has worked onsite at Google and Uber. Dr. Fortman is experienced in helping people who are struggling with relationship difficulties, anxiety & depression, low self esteem, LGBT related issues, grief, abuse & neglect, and trauma.

Over the years, I have developed an eclectic perspective to therapy and utilize a unique combination of psychotherapy, mind-body awareness and hypnotic relaxation techniques, family systems therapy, emotion focused therapy and cognitive behavioral techniques. My wide range of knowledge and competency in various psychological theories allows me to be flexible in my treatment. I aim to revive my patients from the current positions in their lives and help bring in the much needed harmony and infused positivity that will allow my clients to progress in their minds, their mental health and their overall life.

Making changes in our lives can feel impossible at times, even when our habits and thinking patterns no longer serve us. In the therapy room, I practice radical acceptance with the ups and downs of growth with humor, patience, and curiosity. Grounded in the DBT tradition, I prioritize nonjudgment and dialectical thinking: we can accept difficult realities and still lead a life worth living.

North Shore Pediatric Therapy has two neuropsychology testing centers, one in Naperville and the other out of our Des Plaines center! Our pediatric neuropsychologists include Dr. Greg Stasi, PhD (pronounced "Stacy") Dr. Rhiannon Law, PhD, and Dr. Angel David, PhD. We have an Autism Testing Clinic which was set up explicitly for children who have suspected autism spectrum disorder. Our ideal client is a child, as young as 15 months old, who has signs and symptoms of neurodevelopmental or developmental-behavioral needs!

Asking for help isn't easy and takes a great deal of courage. I greatly respect the individuals I work with and do my best to make their experience one that feels healing and encouraging. Dr. Melanie Jambrosic is a license clinical and sports psychologist at New Insights Behavioral Services. She has years of experience providing therapy and neuropsychological assessment. She also founded Sport Psych Studio, a sports psychology consulting practice, and published the "Mindfulness Journaling Workbook" to help clients improve their mental health and performance. She quickly realized that the mental side was crucial to performance and well-being.
