I believe in developing a collaborative relationship with my patient where treatment is transparent and makes sense to you. Through education, skill-building, and supportive conversation, we will work together to accomplish your goals. We will not only address the struggles that concern you, but we will identify and build on your unique areas of strength. This will promote resiliency to stress and help you successfully navigate the complications of life.

I work with folks of all ages who may be reacting to stresses at work, school, or in relationships, or unhappy with depression, anxiety, ADHD, or trauma. A psychiatrist therapist is just that. Before the first visit, I will first send you medical and other questionnaires to bring with you so we can remain thorough and focused only on your needs. You can usually count on some relief and a clear plan when you leave. Most of my patients see a gradual lifting of symptoms within the first week or two and sustained improvement thereafter.

I specialize in working with clients who are navigating: neurodivergence, ADHD, ASD, PTSD, LGBTQIA+ and gender nonconforming identities, depression, anxiety, and forms of trauma.
The urge to not just exist, but to thrive is universally one of the toughest challenges that one can learn to navigate. It can be even harder when you may not feel equipped with the tools to prepare yourself for this massive endeavor. You may feel the need to mask, or hide your truest self in order to ‘get by’ and make things easier on yourself and others around you. I try to tell clients that they deserve to allow themselves to be the truest version of yourself, no matter what that may look like or what society may think. I am here to help guide you through the veil of uncertainty so that I can help you be your most authentic self.

I have helped my clients cope with major life issues in university, school, business, community, and hospital settings. I have been fortunate to have had full-time commitments on the counseling staff at Northwestern University, serving as the director during my final eight of fifteen years, and retiring after 28 years as a professor in the graduate program of Counselor Education at Northeastern Illinois University, educating and training master's level counselors in clinical and school settings. During those years, I continued working with outside consulting and private practice, but now focus on clinical practice.

I also specialize in treating complex PTSD and adults with late-in-life ADHD diagnoses.
If you're someone who feels like they have "been there, done that" when it comes to therapy and are looking for deeper understanding of yourself, I just might be your therapist. I'm someone who believes coping skills are fantastic, but challenging deeply-held emotional beliefs is what moves people towards lasting change. To do this, I make space for the people I work with to feel understood for exactly who they are. Because I know that when people are able to explore their full selves in a compassionate, curious way, they will be amazed at what they can change (or in some cases, learn to love and accept!).

ADHD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
