My specialty is dealing with trauma reaction, be it a "big T" trauma incident, or a lot of "little t" experiences.
Stuff happens that affects our thoughts, emotions and behaviors. I believe your mind works fine. But a facet of your mind is causing you to respond or feel in ways that make life more difficult than it should be. This ongoing emotional distress or pain is not helping you be more effective in your life. I will help you address that 'facet of mind' to unplug the emotional pain and irrational thinking, so that your thoughts and energy are moving you towards what is valuable in your life.

I have specialized training in Trauma work, in addition to extensive experience working through long term mental illness.
So much of what happens in life feels outside our control. Hard experiences, in childhood or more recently, can start to dominate our outlook on the future. Nothing can erase bad experiences, but my hope for all of my clients is that they are able to integrate all of their experiences, and better know themselves. By doing this, we can start to understand the foundations of our emotional upheavals and unhelpful reactions. With this information in hand, I believe, we are all best equipped to face our own unique challenges.

I utilize EMDR to help process trauma and work through symptoms associated with PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
Asking for help can feel very intimidating especially when it comes to your mental health. My clinical focus centers around helping individuals heal and process what they are going through and what they have been through. Counseling is a safe, nonjudgemental space to start your mental health healing process.

I specialize in couples work am also certified in Anger Management (AMTP) and Trauma Treatment (CCTP).
When choosing a therapist it is important to consider many different perspectives. First and most importantly, is this someone that you will be comfortable working with? Education and experience are other considerations? However, when it comes right down to it, it's about connecting. All the great tools that a therapist may have will be useless if you do not connect with them. I have heard from many of my clients about negative experiences in the past with therapists and how they feel like nothing really happened.

For more than 25 years, I've worked with adults experiencing a wide range of issues -- including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, life changes, loss and grief, recovery from trauma, workplace issues, sexual abuse, low self-esteem, addictions, infertility, pregnancy loss and post-partum depression.
I believe that the clients who walk into my office are strong. They have an inner strength that is the cornerstone of change. The voice that says, "Enough, I'm taking back my life." Together, we will champion that strength to discover the blockages that have held you back or kept you suffering and create solutions and options to get you back on track. I passionately believe that you deserve better -- let's get to work. My approach to therapy is client centered and goal directed.

Therapy is sometimes perceived as a one sided conversation without experiences of meeting and talking with someone as a real person. I can assure you, I am as real as it gets! I work with clients that suffer from various issues like ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, etc., to ensure you are able to cope with these while working through every day life in a realistic manner. Life is too short to feel like you have to only go through the motions every day, you should be living your best life, despite life's ups and downs.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
