Life can be difficult, but I believe that we were built to do and overcome difficult things, even when the task of healing seems impossible. Your feelings are important, and you have the power to transform and heal within a safe space.

I enjoy using play and art therapy to assist children in expressing themselves in a language that they understand.
The growth of a child depends deeply on their experiences and what they make of them. Children may express emotions around their experiences in ways that may be difficult for caregivers to manage. I believe it is important to create a safe space where clients feel empowered and heard in order to advocate, understand and help them develop skills to get their needs met. I aim to build a strong therapeutic alliance with your child in order to better understand their world.

I have experience working across the lifespan with individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, life transitions, self-esteem, trauma, self-identity, and learning disabilities. I incorporate mindfulness, embodiment/somatic experiencing, self-compassion, and expressive art therapy techniques.
I aim to create a safe space where clients can explore multidimensional issues and set down the load of living in a messy society, even if just for an hour each week. My primary clinical experience has been working with clients in the LGBTQIA+ community and neurodivergent clients (ASD, ADHD, CPTSD, OCD, etc.). My additional work includes but is not limited to religious trauma, body neutrality, anxiety, and depression. I also love working with other clinicians. Embedded in how I support clients is my commitment to anti-racism, anti-ableism, intersectional feminism, Health at Every Size, and support for marginalized communities.

Art therapy can help people express themselves when words fail.
My therapy approach is to first find out what the client is seeking from therapy, and if they have prior experiences with therapy or art therapy. Then we can set the course, and shape it to meet their needs. I give assignments in between sessions to help clients gain confidence getting where they want to be when they leave therapy. After all, the work of living is not done in a therapy office, so life skills need to be practiced and honed outside of therapy. My work is informed by a combination of cognitive behavioral, relational/feminist, client centered and psycho-dynamic therapy, but not limited by these frameworks.

As a board-certified registered art therapist and counselor utilizing EMDR, DBT, and trauma-informed mindfulness, I bring over 10 years of clinical experience to the holistic treatment of mental health.
Creative people often need multiple ways to process and integrate information before things "click" and real change takes place. Studio art therapy provides an accepting space for flexible self-expression that moves beyond words into the sensory and tangible world. I focus on helping clients connect their unconscious and conscious minds to align around personal and relationship goals in fresh, creative ways. Together we can enter a space where safety and exploration are bridged, and issues of mood, anxiety, and past trauma can be safely and effectively worked through to improve overall functioning through mind-body integration.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
