Working with couples, I know that even in the best of times relationships are challenging. Counseling can go down many paths to help make challenges more manageable. We have four main paths we can explore: Starting fresh with new skills and approaches to being a couple. Making amends and forgiveness. Exploring your family culture and what you bring into your relationship. Restructuring, uncoupling, separation, or compassionate divorce. Let's discuss the main options and together agree upon the focus of our work moving forward. I take an integrated approach to working with couples which has been informed by many master clinicians.

There are times in life when issues can feel too big to handle on your own. At these moments I believe it is a strength to reach out and ask for help. It has been a labor of love for me that for over 30 years I have been able to help people through these difficult times.

It's a privilege to work with clients on the things that matter to them the most. Our dreams, our goals and our closest relationships, these are at the core of who we are and our path toward creating a life that is happy, satisfying and complete. All of us can benefit from the support and encouragement of a therapist who listens and helps to understand so that we can build the lives and relationships we hope for. As a therapist, my goal is to support you in a caring way. I do this by creating a non-judgmental and accepting space where individuals and couples can work through what is stopping them.

Healing begins with both a collaborative and relational process. Through joint exploration, I assist my clients in helping them focus and create a more rich, full and meaningful life, while effectively trying to manage the stress and pain that life inevitably brings. Providing a safe and comfortable environment that is centered on a trusting client/therapist relationship is essential for my client's personal growth and improved quality of life.

Does your anxiety take over at the worst possible moments of your day? Do you feel like you try harder and harder to change unhelpful habits but don’t seem to follow through on? Getting stuck in this cycle is exhausting, feels shameful, and depleting. What if you were to try different and not harder? My goal is to help people manage difficult experiences before it leads them to flake on friends, use substances, or have conflict in relationships. I work with adults and young adults to empower themselves to deal with life on life's terms.

I understand that even starting the process of therapy can feel daunting. Together we will work to tackle the difficult challenges you are facing, identifying and setting goals while building healthy coping strategies. Discovering fresh perspectives and engaging in psychological, and emotional healing will empower you with a newfound sense of agency in how you meet yourself, your relationships, and the world. Often a crisis brings you into my office, but it may be that you just want to grow, or want more out of life.

My approach comes from a patient-centered standpoint. I believe the patient/therapist relationship is based on safety, trust, and honesty. You are the expert on your own life and I will be there for support and guidance. You do not always have control over your emotions and thoughts, but you have the power to change those thoughts from negative to positive. You gain insight and become self-aware when you are doing what you are comfortable with. I enjoy incorporating expressive arts into counseling, when appropriate, because there are many ways for patients to express their own thoughts and emotions.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
