I have completed training in Gottman method and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, both empirically validated treatment approaches.
With over 20 years in the field, I believe that effective therapy begins with clearly defining the problem being addressed and the desired outcome. I am particularly focused on helping you develop stronger relationships through effective communication, personal insight and compassion. Whether you are trying to set healthy boundaries, express yourself, or build stronger bonds. Using empathy and humor, I am well suited to help clients who are struggling with relationship problems, depression, sexual compulsion, family conflicts and anxiety.

My primary goal is to help clients find the hope and courage to change and heal. I believe that all life circumstances, relationships, and experiences can lead to change and greater self-acceptance. Ultimately therapy helps clients cope with loss and use difficult life transitions to promote growth. In working with individuals, couples, families, and children, I have helped them cultivate resources and develop strengths from very challenging diagnoses and life circumstances. I have helped clients suffering from relationship conflicts, health crises, depression, trauma and loss issues, compulsive behaviors, and anxiety disorders.

Life is wonderful. Life can also be difficult, for everyone. Stress induced anxiety and depression are among the most widespread causes of unhappiness. Finding the balance between taking care of ourselves and taking care of others, seeking joy and helping others find it, can be challenging. All of us human beings have gone through some level of difficult experiences in our lives, but I fully believe that, as the saying goes, it is not what cards we are dealt, but how we play them that determines the direction of our lives.

At the heart of this work, we do is the belief that each person deserves respect and has within the capacity for healing and joy. Whatever the struggle, addressing it must start with each person being seen, heard, understood. We may not always be able to choose the circumstances we face such as illness, the end of a relationship, or trauma. Instead, we can choose what we are going to do about our challenges

No one person grieves the same. And no loss is the same. And yet, it can be overwhelming to figure out how to move through it. What we do know is that loss puts us is a whole new world without our loved ones, a new world that can be difficult to make sense of.

We are more than our health. But we know that illness and disability impacts nearly every part of our lives. Whether it is a personal illness, chronic pain or you are a caregiver, you know that its impact can be felt in our relationships, work, finances, and our ability to enjoy our lives.

I have a passion for couples seeking to improve their relationship with their spouse or significant other and who yearn for deeper levels of emotional, relational and physical intimacy. I also come alongside parents and their children to develop better ways of communicating by giving them tools as to how to relate to each other in ways that create a calmer, more peaceful home, where defiant attitudes give way to mutual cooperation and higher levels of trust and respect between all family members.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
