I believe that the most important ingredient to successful therapy is the therapeutic relationship itself. My goal is to create a relationship in which my clients feel safe, understood, and free to be their genuine selves. When that is achieved, I believe that clients have the space to build self-compassion, discover their own unique strengths, and explore their goals for a more fulfilling life. I work with clients to collaboratively create treatment plans that fit their needs. I understand that coming to therapy is a vulnerable experience and I am careful to move at each client’s pace to help them feel comfortable.

Life is not easy. There are constant worries, so much to do while not enough time, and it’s easy to feel lost or alone. Despite wanting to change, many people find themselves stuck, feeling sad, anxious, and lonely. Figuring out how to communicate, feel more connected, and get your needs met in a relationship often takes more understanding of yourself and learning some new skills. Feelings of anxiety, worry, stress, and sadness may signal the need for a change. Navigating change and the mix of emotions is stressful enough; it does not have to be lonely. Sharing the burden and journey of change makes an incredible difference.

Starting therapy and let alone being vulnerable with another individual can be very jarring and uncomfortable. Whether we are feeling alone, managing a new job, over coming past trauma or grief, or even not knowing where to even begin. My goal is to provide individuals with a safe and non judgemental space to process these feelings with compassion and respect. My background as a clinician serving adolescence to geriatric populations of Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, from intense psychological trauma and other psychologic disorders, has equipped me with the knowledge to assist clients through any of these obstacles.

You are reading these words for a reason: You want to make a change and you're not sure how. Perhaps you feel socially inept and terrified of judgement or rejection. Or you feel alone and disconnected, unable to communicate effectively with the people you love most. Or you feel at odds with your body and dependent on food rituals surrounded by secrecy and shame. The human mind is wonderfully creative and adaptive. Your symptoms are valid responses to internal and environmental circumstances. In therapy, we can hold and heal your experience together.

I work most effectively with those who may be facing a life transition (occupational, personal relationship, emotional) or a health challenge. For 10 years I was the Director of Psychosocial Oncology at Rush University Medical Center focusing on the emotional aspects of being diagnosed, undergoing treatment and post treatment for cancer. I worked both with patients and family members who were interested in learning how to cope more adaptively with the stressors in their lives. I continue to work with individuals and family members who are struggling to cope with a medical diagnosis.

Looking for a therapist can be hard, but therapy doesn’t have to be! People seek help for many different reasons, but generally one common factor determines how effective therapy will be, the quality of the connection between the client and their therapist. I strive to make clients feel comfortable by providing a safe, nonjudgmental, and caring, atmosphere. I believe empathy, trust, curiosity, and humor are essential components to an effective therapeutic relationship. If this sounds like a good fit for you, I hope you will take that next step and call to see how I can be of help to you.

Each of our lives travel a unique journey filled with experiences that write our personal story. While capable of bringing immeasurable joy, life may also not always provide us with the lasting happiness we desire. In our lives we will encounter pain, losses, suffering and struggles, realities of life over which we have little control. As human beings, pain is part of the fabric of our human condition. My aim is to guide you to be more aware, more often. By bringing the entire range of thoughts and feelings into awareness, we can access new ways to overcome challenges.

I provide a warm and nonjudgmental atmosphere so you will have a safe place to let your guard down and explore. You will be heard. You may be experiencing a "lost at sea" moment - which can be expressed in many shades of sadness, worries, or even anger. These moments can be circumstantial, or perhaps, you just can't seem to stop yourself from revisiting old challenges. We will identify that very pattern you get stuck and get to the core of the issues so you can start to heal and reach your optimal emotional well being.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
