My approach comes from a patient-centered standpoint. I believe the patient/therapist relationship is based on safety, trust, and honesty. You are the expert on your own life and I will be there for support and guidance. You do not always have control over your emotions and thoughts, but you have the power to change those thoughts from negative to positive. You gain insight and become self-aware when you are doing what you are comfortable with. I enjoy incorporating expressive arts into counseling, when appropriate, because there are many ways for patients to express their own thoughts and emotions.

I work with families after they have used every available community resource and their child (age 11 to 26) is still struggling due to cognitive, social, emotional, behavioral or psychiatric issues. My training as a School Psychologist has prepared me to evaluate the complex interaction of these issues. I work with the family and treating professionals to find the best RESIDENTIAL PLACEMENT for the child. I visit over 80 schools and programs per year, I have personally and professionally evaluated each placement to assess the specific therapeutic and educational supports they provide. I follow my clients for at least one year.

It seems like you've got it together but nobody seems to realize you're floundering. They don't know what's inside: a tally of every failure, a plan for every what if, chronic worry, fear and insecurity and thoughts- so many thoughts! It's impossible to focus. You may play a lot of roles: spouse, friend, parent, employee, entrepreneur- it's crazymaking! It can be easy to lose the YOU in all of this. You were a person before you became the social chameleon you're required to be right now. The anxious feeling never goes away and you don't know what to do, so you suffer quietly. You don't have to stay here.

I believe a trusting and collaborative therapeutic relationship will help you increase self awareness, understanding and the acceptance needed to bring about positive change and growth. It is equally as important to focus on your strengths as it is to focus on the areas of your life you find to be challenging. Therapy provides an opportunity to learn more about yourself and better understand your life choices as well as assist you in better understanding your most important relationships, past and present.

With appropriate support, these same students can become strong self-advocates by understanding their learning style while applying strategies to manage school challenges.
Speaking to adults… Joseph Campbell defines Compassion as “…an immediate participation in the suffering of another to such a degree that you forget yourself and spontaneously do what is necessary.” With hybrid training as therapist, teacher, and coach, I compassionately support individuals exactly where they are in their life. Whether one wishes to address past trauma, wants to contemplate a career decision and change of environment, or wants support with relationships and life’s many unpredicted events, I create the space to do so at the pace and depth that the individual wants and is ready to successfully take on.

Learning to formulate, understand and act on their response to this question helps young people improve social and interpersonal skills, develop decision making abilities, attain heightened self-awareness and gain effective life skills.
To young people the world is chaotic; filled with academic, parental and peer pressures. Their inner strengths and desires get lost amid the noise. I teach my client to see through the chaos and to take control of what is best for each of them. Young people need another voice, an objective voice that makes them question who they are and what they want. Not only the voice of a parent, teacher or school because all three are unable to be truly objective. My role is that of mentor/guide asking the question "What is it that you really want?"

Meaningful human connection is something we all desire, and is what I believe to be at the core of a strong therapeutic relationship. I have always had a passion for learning about other’s lived experiences and how they have shaped someone into the person they are.

Having had chronic respiratory challenges my entire childhood, I was taken to the ER on a regular basis learning from a young age, the importance of self-care and calming strategies.
Are you stressed? Is your body speaking to you with hard to understand symptoms? There's a tension that remains when a task is incomplete. This tension is not only related to the projects we have yet to complete but also relates to the internal tension from not speaking our truth. Dr. Weissman is known for treating those with anxiety-based stress conditions like PTSD and OCD. His skills in mind body medicine and clinical psychology allow him to rapidly assess the depth and breath of stress in a person's life and in their life and to co-create an individualized treatment plan leading to greater self-care & personal empowerment.

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
