Many of us recognize that “something” in our lives needs to change for us to become happier and to improve the quality of our lives. Often times we feel either stuck or become ambivalent about taking steps because of the fear of what change will lead to. People that are looking for professional mental health services come from all ethnicities, backgrounds, and walks of life. Some are in the twilight of their lives, while others are just getting started. Some need help with delicate relationship struggles, while others may find that they are searching for a diagnosis to help them finally make sense of things. Then there are those that are just looking for someone to talk to about what is going on in their lives. What you need to remember though, is that no matter what you are looking to get help with, you are not alone. The first step can be the hardest, but here you are!

I discovered my passion to make a difference in others’ lives when I began my career in Behavioral Health over 20 years ago. I am privileged to meet people and together we find the solutions to whatever life problems come into our lives. I have been consistently told by clients that they feel safe and comfortable talking about whatever brings them in and that they feel better when they leave a session. It’s my goal to provide you the ability to leave a session with more than you came with as part of the process of change and healing.

Client-centered is always Kim's approach during a session. This allows a client to open up at their own pace. She takes time to build rapport with her clients, which creates a space for clients to process complex feelings and emotions. A few areas of specialization for Kim are substance abuse, anxiety, and family conflict.

Ask yourself these three questions... 1) Am I happy? 2) Am I doing what's best for me? 3) Am I in control of my life? I believe that everyone should have the potential to answer yes to those questions and lead a less stressful life. Intervention Therapists

How does an intervention work?

An intervention is a planned, structured meeting in which a person’s family or friends voice concerns about the person’s behavior and its consequences; the goal is for the person to accept treatment. In this meeting, the person’s loved ones (often with the guidance of a trained interventionist) share how the person’s behavior has harmed them and the consequences if the person refuses treatment. They collectively ask the person to accept a proposed treatment plan.

How effective are interventions?

There isn’t extensive research on the efficacy of interventions, in part because success is difficult to measure. Individuals often enter addiction treatment after an intervention, for example, but treatment itself may not work, especially if the person only begins due to external pressure from others rather than due to internal motivation to change. However, if all other attempts at helping someone have failed, an intervention may be worth exploring.

What are the limitations of interventions?

While a friend or family member’s intentions are in the right place in wanting to help a loved one through an intervention, there are significant limitations to the approach. The surprising nature of the event can make the person feel ambushed or judged. They may feel embarrassed or ashamed as a result, and relationships may be strained or broken. This can make it difficult for the individual to be receptive to the concerns of their loved ones and the interventionist.

Are there alternatives to interventions?

Rather than confronting a loved one through an intervention, an effective and less pressured approach is to create space for a caring, open, one-on-one conversation. This works best if the loved one asks open-ended questions, listens attentively to the answers, and frames their observations and statements with concern rather than judgment. More than one conversation may be needed, but change can take root over time.
