I specialize in anxiety, life transitions, and self-esteem, and eating concerns.
Do you ever have something you want to say but restrain yourself from doing so out of fear of others' reactions? The truth is what we tell ourselves others think can be a barrier when building an ideal lifestyle. A simple task such as a walk or puzzle quiets negative thoughts and allows you to open up to get the most out of your session. If you are experiencing decreased self-esteem, depression, anxiety, relationship troubles, or eating concerns reach out by phone or email!

I work with adolescents, adults, and couples with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relational issues, and trauma.
We all face times in life that call for support and a safe environment to slow down and gain perspective about the challenges we face. I believe there is hope and consider it a privilege to walk with clients through the challenges they are facing.

The world and our individual lives can change rapidly. Overwhelm, anxiety and depression are some of the many byproducts. As J. Whether you are new to therapy, previously tried therapy, or are have an acute need for support, I welcome you to my practice. I can help with symptoms of trauma, depression, anxiety, stress, and grief. For more than 25 years, I've worked with adults experiencing a wide range of issues -- including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, life changes, loss and grief, recovery from trauma, workplace issues, sexual abuse, low self-esteem, addictions, infertility, pregnancy loss and post-partum depression.
I believe that the clients who walk into my office are strong. They have an inner strength that is the cornerstone of change. The voice that says, "Enough, I'm taking back my life." Together, we will champion that strength to discover the blockages that have held you back or kept you suffering and create solutions and options to get you back on track. I passionately believe that you deserve better -- let's get to work. My approach to therapy is client centered and goal directed.

I have been coming alongside individuals and families to provide understanding and motivation. I believe we are capable of finding peace emotionally and spiritually. I like using nature and activities in counseling along with art to help process our stories. We use metaphors in adventure therapy and interactive games in play therapy to grow in new ways. I have experience also as a coach, teacher, and youth leader. We have raised 2 children and had a foster son. I supervise Cathy who is a PLPC/CIT2 and enjoys working with women/teens. We all are skilled in interpersonal process therapy.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
