“To change your life, you have to change your life.” Your current circumstances do not have to dictate your ultimate outcome. Regardless of the challenges you're facing right now, you always have the power to determine your path forward. Over the years, I’ve discovered that shifting our perspective can be a powerful tool for tackling life’s challenges, including anxiety, stress, and depression. Whether it's your marital journey, raising children, or managing a career, how you view your responsibilities can transform your experience.

You feel lost. Entirely alone in your struggles, like no one can understand what you’re going through. You desperately wish you had a better handle on things and feel like a failure for your shortcomings. But this problem isn’t unique. The experience is so common that there are memes about it. Everyone struggles; it’s perfectly normal. Of course, knowing that doesn’t make those thoughts and feelings go away. But that’s where we come in.

The things that we experience and go through in life can create different lens in which we see ourselves. Like a pair of glasses, each one is different and can have a different impact on the story we tell about who we are. Sometimes with the things we experience can create a lens of low sense of self, anxiety, depression, or even trauma responses. It's important to have someone you trust who can aid in walking you through those different experiences to be able to dismantle the thoughts and the emotions, from the experiences to lead you to living a happier and more fulfilling life.

I’m Tonye Denise Lattimore, the curator of Get Your Mind Right Therapy Services. I work best with clients who have experienced relationship, religious, and childhood trauma (can include abandonment, domestic violence, rape) which has in turn affected how you relate to yourself and to the world. Trauma has a way of showing up in our relationships and within ourselves, oftentimes appearing as lack of trust, cutting other’s off, disconnects, addiction of all sorts, isolation, anxiety, and depression. If you are ready to do your healing work, I would love to partner with you.

The journey called life can be very painful. It has been one of the greatest rewards of my life to see people who have been negatively impacted by relationship issues, depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns turn their situation around . The power to change our life course, habits, and perceptions sometimes appears to be a never ending struggle. I indeed applaud you for reaching out because it reaffirms that people are not giving up and giving in to their situations.

It is not always easy to reach out to a stranger for help, yet you know you are ready to make a change in your life. My focus is on helping clients by understanding systemic or external factors that may impact your relationship with yourself and others. With that understanding we then work together to use that understanding to influence how we treat ourselves and engage the world around us.

How do you treat yourself? Do you show yourself the same compassion and care you offer your family, friends, and partner? Are you your biggest supporter or your harshest critic? My passion is working with adults who are unsatisfied with their relationships—be it with friends, family, or significant others. You deserve to feel loved and important. I want to help you identify and remove the barriers keeping you from realizing the life you want.

Hi there! My name is Ryan, and I am currently a counselor in training studying at Governors State University. I am pursuing a master’s degree in counseling with a specialization in marriage, couple, and family therapy. I am honored to have the privilege of serving unique individuals, couples, and families on their journey to healing and wellness. I believe that clients have the innate ability and tools needed to reach their full potential.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
