Ajit Samudra is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in IL with over 20 years of experience helping children, teens, young adults, and families. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology at Case Western Reserve University and completed his Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Indiana State University. Ajit also completed postgraduate studies at The Family Institute at Northwestern University. Ajit has extensive experience working with children, youth, and families in community mental health and school settings. He has helped clients with a broad range of presenting problems, including school problems, ADHD, executive function, and emotion regulation difficulties. He has worked with clients exhibiting anxiety, depression, stress and anger management problems, adjustment to life transitions, self-esteem, and work/life balance in young adults. Ajit is a strong believer in collaborating with clients and families and using a systemic, multicultural lens to help clients cope with stressors and create positive change. He works with individuals, families and couples and enjoys working with clients from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

I have over 30 years experience in doing therapy with children, teens, and adults. More than half this time has been spent helping children and teens, and their parents, deal with social/emotional difficulties of childhood and adolescence. Areas I have been focusing on include school performance, peer relationships, parent-child relationships, self esteem, anxiety issues, and depression. I also have considerable experience in working with family issues, including divorce, and in working with individual adults who are experiencing anxiety, depression, self esteem, or relationship issues.

Dr. Rios works with a broad spectrum of clients and has experiences in working with clients with a range of problems including: depression, anxiety, trauma, school problems, and relationship difficulties. Dr. Rios specializes in individual, couples and family therapy with children, adolescents, and adults of diverse backgrounds. She enjoys learning and understanding the unique elements that all of her clients bring with them in therapy. Dr. Rios values her relationships with her clients and sees the therapy relationship as one of mutual respect and trust.

Throughout life, we are faced with many challenges...some more severe than others, some harder to overcome, and some which we ignore for the moment. When we choose not to face our challenges, it can negatively impact our true being. My experience includes working with those struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, grief and loss, substance abuse, trauma, parent-child relationships, crisis intervention, just to name a few.

Traumatic events are painful and often result in wounds that can't be seen. I believe that understanding trauma and how trauma has affected you is the first step in healing from trauma. You don’t have to do this alone. I enjoy working with children, adolescents, and adults – those who have experienced trauma and those who may be struggling with stress, anxiety, or depression. In addition, I also work with families experiencing separation or divorce. My goal is to help families effectively communicate while you try to figure out the emotional, physical, and custodial stressors that often accompany a divorce.

In order for us to grow, we must challenge our preconceived notions of self and experiences, as those are what shape our truths. We are not alone, even when it feels as if we are. We are connected to the thousands of lives that have touched ours and have had a hand in creating who we are. I approach my work through a systemic lens, in other words, I see the world as a huge ball of yarn. Those strings are our connectedness, the relationships we hold that connect us to our culture, our family, our history, and our future.

Showing up to therapy - wholeheartedly - takes serious courage. I meet my clients’ courage with warmth, energy, and openness. I work with individuals and families across the lifespan, and have advanced training in working with members of the adoption constellation. I especially enjoy working with clients who are new to therapy; I seek to create a comfortable environment where vulnerability, humor, empathy, and playfulness can co-exist.
