As a Latina with over seven years of combined academic and clinical training, I believe in the importance of culturally competent, collaborative mental health care. A bulk of my work as a therapist is centered around the migrant experience of Latinos and how issues of acculturation and generational trauma can negatively impact our mental health. My personal and academic experiences drive me to find culturally tailored interventions in therapy. As a first-generation Mexican American, I understand the importance of incorporating our cultural values into healing spaces.

I believe that people are, by our very nature, social beings. We all understand that there are trials and tribulations throughout our lives. Anxiety, depression, PTSD, marital strife, and other mental health concerns can arise even in the strongest of people and relationships. I utilize empathic listening and other skills to foster a safe, respectful, and caring environment for all my clients. In doing so, I hope my clients can safely explore the strength and resilience within themselves. I hope to help my clients grow and realize their potentials so as to be better equipped for life's journey.

I am eclectic in my approach, but my main focus is Trauma focused CBT and Solution focused CBT.
At Mack's Empowerment Counseling, we know clients do not want to be in therapy forever. I work with clients at their own pace to not only process what they are going through, but also help them be autonomous. I help clients process through their trauma or what they're going through while teaching them coping and wellness skills to take control back over their own lives. I know anything can be considered a crisis or a traumatic event and that's why I create a non-judgmental space, flexibility and adaptability to address different client needs.

I help my clients find peace of mind, gain insight, and be more present and grounded in their life to attain their goals and life purpose. I offer a therapeutic environment where clients learn to relax, feel safe, and then peel off the layers of a problem to become aware of the answers each client seeks. My specialties include stress, anxiety, trauma, grief, relationship issues, women's issues, academic problems, and chronic/health concerns. Together, we will examine how your thoughts, feelings, behaviors/actions, bodily sensations, and internal images affect the way you respond to others and within yourself (e.g., inner voice).

I specialize in helping clients who are experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, and bipolar related disorders.
Personal growth and soul-searching take courage. Therapy is a journey, and I am ready to begin that journey with those courageous clients. It takes courage to seek help and sit with a stranger, the therapist, and talk about what troubles you, what motivates you and what you love. Counseling is about you and for you. No matter the age and stage in your life seek help if you feel you need it. At times, what is going on in our lives seems insurmountable. Having someone to provide encouragement, listen without judgement, and helping you set goals and realistic expectations can ease the burden.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
