There are times when we struggle with an issue and need someone to encourage and help us. Sometimes we need to tell just one other person something we have done or been through. And once in a while our wheels come off, and we need serious support and help. It is very important to me that you feel safe when you come into my office, and that you are heard when it comes to the issues you are facing. I want you to feel you won't be judged and hopeful that true healing can occur.

Life is rarely the "should be", always-thought-it-would-be one we imagined. We try lots of things that don't work. I know what that's like. But I've also built a loving, meaningful, fulfilling life on the ashes of an old one. So I know what's possible. I can help you understand what is going on and how you got here. By recognizing and defining a problem, we find clues to what's needed to move forward. It's not easy, but it is so worth it! So make the most of your pain. Let it wake you up to a better future.

Many people seek out therapy during a time that feels particularly challenging. Though the difficulties that we face can often seem clearly recognizable, the experience of going through a loss, a life transition, or the end of a relationship can have deep and overwhelming impacts. Sometimes, as a person navigates these challenges, they can come to feel stuck within an emotional experience, an idea, or the way that they tend to relate to themselves and others. It might help you to know that, with time and dedication, many people uncover new possibilities, meanings, and ways of being through therapy.

As a therapist, my goal is to affirm my clients’ unique experiences and to support them in living more empowered lives. Everyone has the tools within themselves to flourish, but life experiences can make it challenging to connect with those strengths and abilities. The impact of trauma and oppression can move us into places of isolation and self-doubt. I respect how people adapt in order to survive, and I deeply honor their resiliency. I also believe that people deserve more than mere survival. We all deserve joy, connection, and safety.

Overall, I view myself as generalist who is comfortable working with a range of concerns including: individual and couples counseling, grief and loss, coping with substance use/abuse, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, perfectionism, women's issues, relationship conflict and concerns, and separation and/or divorce.
I am currently taking on new clients throughout Illinois via telehealth appointments. Seeking a therapist takes courage and demonstrates a readiness to move forward in new directions. I see myself as a catalyst for exploration into various areas of your life, such as relationship patterns or emotional barriers that may be impacting you in negative ways. I believe it is important to work collaboratively and to understand these parts of your identity/experience. It is important to find the right fit for this work, so I encourage you to reach out for a consultation.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
