I believe that best treatment practices acknowledge the whole being; body, mind, and spirit. When one area of our being is out of balance, the whole of the individual is impacted. Body, mind, and spirit are connected and as such, must be taken into account when providing treatment. It would be an honor and a privilege to accompany you on your journey towards wholeness and restoration.

I have worked in the mental health field for more 20 years following a career as a junior and senior high teacher. I have experience with everyone from very young children to elderly individuals. I believe firmly in the individual's ability to change if they so desire, regardless of education level, socioeconomic status, or past challenges. I approach all people with an open mind and a non-judgmental attitude. Acceptance and kindness are important traits and ones I strive to show each and every person I meet, whether that is within my office or at the grocery store.

This tailored approach is rooted in motivational interviewing (MI) to build rapport and then draws on eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, dialectical behavior therapy ( DBT), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
Are you a young person struggling to make decisions for yourself? Do you feel lost? Does the thought of adulthood overwhelm you? To unburden yourself of this pressure, it may help to talk to someone. Therapy is a space for you to open up without the fear of shame or rejection. I operate my practice based on three tenets: 1) I will listen to you 2) I will provide you with evidence-based tools for life 3) I will ask for your feedback. Together, we will look for patterns that no longer serve you, unpack situations that require resolution, and identify the emotions that you experience throughout this process.

I am experienced in DBT, psychodynamic psychotherapy, mindfulness, and am trained in Level I Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.
There can be moments or events in life that overwhelm our capacity to cope, get in the way of being our authentic selves, or being fully present in our lives. Many are dealing with the impact of the pandemic and navigating this time of social change. During challenges, people may turn to behaviors and ways of being that no longer serve them well. Perhaps this describes your situation, or maybe you are feeling stuck. I am here to help you find your way back into a meaningful life, whatever that means to you. I work with people who are dealing with depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship concerns, and trauma.

I use various evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT, Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.
In both my professional and personal life, I have found one thing to be true: we are most receptive to change when we feel safe and understood. As a psychotherapist, it is my responsibility and desire to cultivate this space in each session. I believe that therapy is most successful when approached through a systemic, client-centered, and strength-based framework. You are the expert of you and together we will explore different perspectives and tools to help you live a self-actualized life. Life is not linear, and so neither will be our work together.

I also use several other tools to help clients including EMDR, DBT, and mindfulness-based strategies.
Sometimes life stress piles up and we find ourselves needing to talk things through with someone. Starting or returning to therapy is a courageous step so it’s important to find the right therapist. I work with people who may be struggling with anxiety at work or in relationships, emotional pain from the past, struggles with sex and intimacy, and navigating life transitions. Often times my clients want to see changes take shape in their life. These changes may look like feeling more confident and self-assured, more present with the people they care most about, enjoying a more fulfilling sex life, and a sense of self-mastery.

My three most used treatment modalities are Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectic Behavioral Therapy ( DBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
Asking for help is never easy. Asking for help with our mental health can be even more difficult because many of us grow up learning to deal with our thoughts and feelings on our own. Whether you decide to seek counseling or not, even the act of learning about the available treatment options is an important step to growth and recovery. I was lucky enough to attend DePaul University for my Masters program and graduated with a degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. DePaul’s counseling program exposed me to a wide array of treatment styles, methods, and orientations.

Most common practices include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Psycho-dynamic Therapy and Strengths Based.
My favorite part about being a clinician is witnessing that moment when a person realizes their own power for change. My intent as a therapist is to help make your journey for change possible. I have a passion for helping people understand that symptoms of depression, anxiety and other disorders are only a part of who we are. They do not define us. I have made it my mission to help people learn to work with and co-exist with their symptoms in a healthy way, allowing for a better quality of life.

I find it best accounts for the depths of our complexity as humans, but I also use mindfulness and DBT with my clients to help build skills and reduce stress.
Many of us walk around thinking that we should be happier, that we're missing an inner sense of vitality. Therapy can be a place to better understand the story of your life and think about how it might be different. My role is to help you clarify your inner sources of conflict in the hopes of living a better, more fulfilling life. I have worked with a wide variety of clients across my careers, and I have found that we are all more human than not. I practice from a trauma-informed lens and believe that true healing is always possible.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
