Diving into the therapeutic process can often be overwhelming and perhaps daunting at times. It is definitely a big shift required from us to be vulnerable and open with our concerns to a stranger. Michael has also felt these similar feelings when beginning his own therapeutic journey. Michael has learned that looking for an ideal fit would mean finding someone who is compassionate, unconditional, empathic, and humorous. Michael has enriched these traits throughout the years which has laid the foundation to create the same safe, inviting, and accepting space for his clients.

My name is Dr. Nashat Shams, and I'm a physician and a Health Psychologist who has worked in this industry since 2005. I have vast experience in counseling individuals with diverse cultural backgrounds and with different age groups. I don't treat diagnoses but clients with compassion and empathy. My interventional approach is CBT, Mindful, and TEAM-CBT. Due to my family background, I'm sensitive to and respectful of various cultures and social backgrounds. I started the journey as a physician and finally became a Ph.D. clinician as I found that the human body cannot be treated without having a healthy mind.

Nilsa is a culturally competent bilingual clinician with a passionate focus on helping individuals, couples, adolescents, and families in overcoming generational trauma and destructive Mental Health related issues. As a Latina, Nilsa understands the barriers and stigma around Mental Health Services in marginalized communities and the effects it has in black and brown communities. Let's start with honoring life... Due to my extensive background and years of professional experience, I am comfortable working with children, youth, adults, couples, and families. I started my training/experience with children and continued servicing all ages. I have worked in many venues of service: mental health, medical, educational, hospice, trauma, supervisory, administrative... providing services to people facing situations that are unknown or a challenge to them. Depression, anxiety (and all the features associated with these two diagnostics), as well as relational and other life issues, are areas that I service.

People seek out a counselor who can guide them--or their child--past their struggles to a better life. They want to get better sooner and stay better longer. For over 20 years, I have had the privilege of helping hundreds of adults, children and adolescents move past problems and achieve their goals --and to make those improvements stick. Some clients face coping with frustration, depression, anxiety, or relationship and family problems. For others, it's dealing with transitions such as divorce, loss and grief, school or relationship challenges, medical problems or job loss. And clients deserve great service.

Our life's work is helping clients achieve a better sense of self and happiness...more recently we've recognized that without good mental health providers, finding this balance in life can be more difficult and stressful. As a result, we tend toward an Integrative approach and help our clients transform into the people they want to be. We see each client as an individual with many parts to their identity. Utilizing a holistic and systemic approach we help clients reintegrate the parts of themselves to function better as individuals and within their systems. Our focus tends toward a systems based approach using behavior methods.

In periods of overwhelming feelings and emotions, we might find ourselves consumed by the noise in our minds. Whether the noise is negative thoughts of the past, present, or future, it all can become so loud that we lose sight of what’s important to us. We lose sight of our resilience, values, present moment, others around us, or even ourselves. We might even find ourselves feeling and behaving inconsistently to who we are or want to be during these periods that we might call anxiety or depression. As your therapist, I will support you in understanding and learning how to respond to these experiences.

Do you often feel like you are not “good enough”? Or do you have a “Critical Voice” in your head that berates you and everything you do/not do? The “voice” may have been helpful at one time, but has moved from being helpful to becoming a punitive task master. So, now you turn to Google or You Tube to try to solve this problem. Maybe it is time to consider getting help, and maybe the help is available through therapy. I have successfully helped individuals with these types of problems. My client base is mostly people struggling with depression, anxiety, relationships, adult ADHD and problems related to alcohol and drug use.

We understand how anxiety, chronic pain/illness, ADHD, autism and racial trauma can shape an individual in ways that create feelings of sadness, depression, anger, etc.
Thrive Counseling & Wellness was founded in 2020 with the idea that therapy doesn't have to be scary. Jen Koriath, LCPC, LPC, the practice owner (pictured), wanted to create a boutique private practice that focused on psychological wellness for those experiencing anxiety, trauma and chronic pain/illness. She herself has an autoimmune disorder, rheumatoid arthritis, that lends to her ability to empathize truly with those experiencing a chronic condition. Dr. Nicol Osborne, PsyD, LSW, joined the practice in 2024 and she lends her expertise in treating clients with autism and ADHD spectrum as well as racial trauma among Black patients.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
