For couples, I work in Imago, EFT, and Gottman.
I partner with clients to create lasting change, by examining their strengths, challenges, and obstacles. My clients span across race, ethnicity, culture, age, sexual orientation, and spiritual beliefs. I work with individuals, couples, and families. People often come to therapy because they feel a gap in being understood- by a friend, by a partner, someone at work, or even by themselves. In our work, we explore new ways of thinking, communicating, reducing stress, and improving relationships.

Congratulations. You have taken the first big step for yourself and/or your relationship. The thought of therapy may feel a bit intimidating, but you won't know the difference it could make until you try. As a therapist with a specialization in Marriage and Family Counseling, I also help individuals, that may be struggling with anxiety, depression, infidelity, substance abuse, grief, divorce, and navigating a blended family. Together, we will set goals, acquire tools and develop coping mechanisms that will strengthen relationships, build confidence and uncover the true potential within each individual.

Clients reach out for help for a variety of reasons: they may feel the loss of a relationship, be struggling with communication with their family or significant other, believe they are under-performing at work, feel depressed, anxious, "down in the dumps," lack self-confidence or may struggle with out of control behaviors. Some clients come to me completely new to therapy, others have explored and worked on themselves for years, but seek a new perspective. I draw on a variety of theoretical approaches to understand a person and explore their perspectives on their life and their issues.

Relationships can be difficult. Whether it is familial, romantic or platonic, each of us is the sum of all the experiences, communities, and cultures we have been involved in and around our entire lives. We often struggle to understand how to effectively communicate, as well as making and keeping connections.

How do we get through this conflict? Are we even compatible anymore? How can we have a relationship that is more fulfilling? How do we navigate this big change? As a relational therapist, I help couples and individuals address these common, sensitive questions. For clients who have decided to divorce, I help facilitate the process of separation and divorce. One of the things my past clients have appreciated about me is my extraordinary openness. I don't expect people to be a certain way, and I don't expect their relationships to take a certain form. Each relationship is as unique as the individuals in it.

Are you looking to repair or improve your relationship? I am a licensed marriage and family therapist specialized in treating couples' issues, specifically around life cycle transitions in the relationship (engagement, fertility, coparenting, divorce, etc), as well as issues around trust and communication. I use a systemic and strengths-based approach in working with my clients and their relationships. I begin focusing therapy on a behavioral level to work on tangible changes, and if the client continues to feel stuck, we continue by addressing cognitions and underlying emotions to the problem to identify where they are constrained.

I enjoy working with people who are ready to explore their mental health, whatever that may be. I have worked with clients of all ages with many different diagnoses: Anxiety, Depression, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, PTSD, etc. It takes a lot of bravery to begin therapy and I enjoy providing information and education, teaching coping skills, or just providing a space to talk and explore whatever struggle my client may be encountering. I am also passionate about working with children and helping them grow their understanding of themselves and help their families learn how to best support them.

When it comes to problems we face, it can be difficult to see past ourselves and because of this, we may internalize this as we are the problem. In reality problems are something that are separate from who we are as individuals and there are often interpersonal relationships and external factors that play a major role in what may bring one to therapy. I help to provide clients with the strength and skills to work collaboratively to move towards change and progress. By calling attention to problematic stories and bringing healthy stories to light, this reframes how we think of issues & restores control of your own narrative.

Feel like an outsider in your own life? It’s rough being LGBTQIA+ when you’re constantly dodging transphobia, homophobia, and the relentless pressure to conform to societal norms that don't fit your truth. If you’re exhausted from trying to fit into boxes that don’t match your truth, or if hiding parts of yourself is wearing you down, you’re in the right place. The path to being unapologetically you is full of bumps and bruises, challenges from external judgment, and internal conflicts that can be exhausting. But it’s also where you find the real freedom, peace, and a sense of belonging that comes from embracing your full identity.

Imago Therapists

How does Imago therapy work?

Imago relationship therapy is a form of couples counseling meant to help partners address conflict, communication problems, and related issues. Imago sessions typically involve couples sitting facing each other and participating in guided conversations. Therapy will also involve exercises such as re-imagining one’s partner as a wounded child; re-romanticizing a relationship through appreciation, surprises, and even gift-giving and restructuring frustrations by transforming complaints into requests. The ultimate goal is to re-envision the relationship as a source of safety and happiness.

What is the Imago method?

A core technique of Imago therapy is the Imago dialogue, in which partners learn to avoid hurtful statements and establish ways to interact based on each having equal space and power. In the dialogue, partners take turns as the “sender,” who shares their thoughts, and the “receiver.” The receiver is asked to “mirror,” or paraphrase, what their partner has said, without response or rebuttal, and then validate their statements, acknowledging understanding even if they do not personally agree with it. Finally, the receiver displays empathy by stating what they imagine the other is feeling, and showing appreciation for it.

How long does Imago therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for Imago therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core techniques of Imago coaching, some couples quickly make progress, but most should expect sessions to extend for months, encompassing at least 12 to 20 sessions, along with extensive “homework” from their therapist.

Does Imago therapy work?

There is limited empirical evidence to support the benefits of Imago therapy, but some smaller studies suggest that it does help couples, at least in the short-term. A 2017 study found that marital satisfaction increased significantly after couples completed 12 sessions of Imago therapy, and remained higher for some time after that, but did not always result in “complete recovery.” Other studies found greater empathy and fewer feelings of relationship burnout in couples after therapy. Some research suggests that Imago therapy can aid individuals as well as couples; people with ADHD in particular may benefit from the development of communication, self-control, and listening skills that form the basis of the technique.
