Life is unpredictable. Anxiety and depression is something we all experience. Everyone handles things in their own unique way. Dealing with things alone can be overwhelming. Sometimes we try running away from it all. How do we know when it's too much for us to handle? When it impacts our relationships and self esteem. That's when you need a helping hand to help you regain your balance. We can work together to identify what the right treatment is for you.

I have of extensive experience working with anxiety/depression, young adult issues and marital counseling.
My clients are hard-working and desire a better quality of life. They are willing to be challenged, trying new techniques to move forward. I use information about normal developmental transitions to move people when they are stuck. The focus is on identity and spirituality as themes I weave into my work. This does not mean organized religion, rather concepts such as connections, acceptance, peace, and letting go. If you choose to combine religion and spiritualuity, for your own growth, that is your choice.

I love working with clients who experience anxiety, panic, stress, life transitions, grief/loss, trauma, identity exploration, addictions, and more.
Hi, I'm Alexandria (Alex) Smith, LCPC, NCC here in Illinois! I meet my clients where they are at in their process by utilizing an eclectic approach where I take from various theories and modalities and use them together to best support you and your needs. I typically pull from CBT, DBT, SFT, and MI to best support you in your journey. I love the combination of eclectic therapy because one treatment modality doesn't work well for everyone. I meet you where you are, come as you are. I want you to feel you can be your true authentic self because I know that's how I like to enter the therapy space.

I also offer cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which is the most widely studied approach to therapy and is considered the "gold standard" and "first line" treatment for anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems.
Are you struggling with a mental health issue, confused and unsure of where to turn? I can help. Through a psychological assessment, I will help you to understand the nature of the problem and what treatments are indicated for that problem. From there, I may offer a course of treatment or connect you with my colleague (Dr. Shannon McCarrick) for therapy. For more information about me, Dr. McCarrick, and our clinic, please see our website: www.mccarrickmcclintock.com

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
